I thought it was just the shape of the t-shirts.

I want to think it's a good idea to avoid anything that is red, unless it's normally something red, like the 4th floor thermometer. That red cord on the 9th floor would be a red herring also.
Which state is this 12th floor referring to...?
that is the big question.
Something about the long belts looped around
the 2 pulleys, reminds me of "ski lifts".
The pink stuff flowing out of the machine looks
like it could be a ski slope...with the "ski-lift belt"
going over it.
There are ski resorts in more than a dozen states.
But which one do you think of first?
AP
Just noticed that "Mt. Rose" ...
(as in the pink stuff coming out of the machine)
is a ski resort in Nevada.
Nevada is the 36th state in the union (the drawer
coordinates...over 3...down 6...36)
There are only two Interstates...80 and 15.
Hmmm.

These were the first that came to my mind...
Lake Placid, New York
Vail, Colorado
Lake Tahoe, Nevada
Did you know that New York State has the most
ski resorts of all 50 states?

I like I-80 too. It's based on old US-40, and Quello has 80 little drawers. Nevada's I-80 rest stops (42, 83, 158, 187, 216, 258, 373) don't ring any bells though.
Since there aren't eyes on every floor, maybe there aren't "I"s on every highway? (I don't care if I'm wrong about this one; I've really enjoyed learning about lost and historical highways.)
I still like Wyoming, Interstate 80, rest area 323 at Red Butte for this floor. Jackson Hole (Hmm. Hole!) in Wyoming is famous for skiing, but I don't know how close that is to this potential dig site.
Someone cautioned on this site that anything with red in it could be a red herring, so I'm conscious that Red Butte could be a false clue. Although wouldn't you get a Red Butte if you sat on that chair in Quello's bedroom! :)
For what it's worth, I found this anagram yesterday night:
Feldspar is apparently a common component of rock formations in Wyoming. Don't know about the reference to Spillages. (Maybe it's "sill pages"? Don't know what that would be, either, except the grappling hook on the 13th floor window sill seems to matter in the text for this floor.)Quote:
Pigs Pants Firewood Laughter Emeralds Eyeballs =
Hole area Red Butte, Wyoming. Feldspars Spillages
Of course, the "fortieth state" anagram I found for the 4th Floor doesn't seem to have led anywhere, so this solution could be the kind of false clue the authors have deliberately sprinkled throughout the text.
This is starting to grab me. I bet the chair in the bedroom represents "chair lift". If we were supposed to find a "key" on each floor (or some floors), this floor's "key" could be "ski". (On Floor 3, the "key" was "Mickey Mouse/Mickey Mantle"; on Floor 10, maybe it was "Flora = Florida Key"....)
Well that's completely awesome. Has it checked out?
Here's a google map of all of the sites. I placed #7 Indiana in the incorrect area, but my boss is giving me the stink eye and I can't fix it right now:
