    Default disregard the hat feather

If we disregard the hat with the feather,
which denotes North bound rest area,
we can include all of the East/West Interstates.
(That would mean we could use the numbers printed on the
    thermometer...70, 80 and 90..for Hyw's.)

Off the bat, I can see:
    Hyw 70, mm 5
    Hyw 80 mm 30
    Hyw 90 mm 2

That opens up a plethora of possibilities!

Checked I-70, mm 5. Nothing there.

I don't think an interstate number will be repeated (which knocks off I-80 and I -90).

I'd like to hear others' thoughts about repeat numbers. In my opinion, there are plenty of interstates to choose from so no need to repeat. At this point, however, with the remaining solves' difficulty levels seemingly significantly upped, who knows?

I don't see any reason why there wouldn't be a repeat of a highway. It's not like putting two on, for example, I-90 necessitates them being close together.
Not saying that I am leaning towards any highway that's already had one (I'm not leaning anywhere and am thoroughly flummoxed, to be honest), but I wouldn't really rule anything out.

Perhaps Gus's "red erring" clue is meant to guide us away from the thermometer (erring -> mistaking)? I've never liked the thermometer's mercury as a number clue anyway since it's not particularly accurate...I don't think there've been any other number clues that have really been open to any interpretation as to the actual number.
I think part of them problem on this floor is that for as much "stuff" is on it, there's not much that seems to be leading to clues. I don't know if this is getting a little too "true to life" with the book, but I've noticed the majority of other clues have been things easily rearranged by the residents. Floor six was the only solve that had what I'd call "permanent" fixtures pointing to the location - literally every other clue so far was pictures or objects that would be simple to add/remove from the building.
So, what's simple to change or move in this room?

    Default good point

    carbon rod,
That is a very good observation.
When Dodge said that the tenants had arranged
their apartments to remember the locations, it
would have been doing something like move an
object, or write on a wall...or chalkboard.

So, the Cluesday solution definitely leads us to Delaware. We know this from forum posts at the CWAF site *and* tweleve -- Gus is practically hitting us over the head with it.

This is, to me, clearly confirmation that the notes on the piano are indeed DE = Delaware. The thermometer = 95 = I-95. The 5 in the sawdust = MM 5... We have what we need, so why isn't anyone going to MM 5 off I-95 in Delaware?? There's only one interstate in Delaware and it ain't that long. Go dig it up!

Yes, I understand that the welcome center was recently under (re)construction, but it re-opened for business on June 28. Are there really NO trees in the whole welcome center complex? Has anyone visited it since it re-opened?

This is a pretty obvious page of clues for this solve. Imagine that they thought to do one that was suppose to be the easiest and then construction send us all looking elsewhere and for other clues, making it one of the hardest. Still, anything is possible. One thing is for sure, if it was/is there, they must feel pretty confident that it still is, knowing about the construction.

    Default Delaware House

I drove by this rest area in June on my way to Baltimore. It was closed.

I did notice that new trees seemed to be planted fairly recently. It is possible that the authors went back and remarked the area if the treasure was not unearthed by the construction.

I plan on going to Baltimore again next weekend, so I will definitely stop and poke around.

I do also know of another rest stop in Delaware. It is probably a long shot, but I will check that one out as well. I will give more detail after I have come back....unless someone finds something over the course of the next week.

Remember there's no rule that says it has to be a tree. Could be a rock, a fencepost, or signage. Anything to which you can affix an aluminum pentagon.

    Default first floor chalkboard

    FB
If they are going to be consistent through this hunt,
it probably will be a tree...according to the
    chalkboard on the first floor...
