How is it possible that Gus' sketchbook drawing of 2nd floor can exist before Gus has been to the 2nd floor to draw it? Remember, he is sketching the top floors first and working his way down.

This is a great observation. I have heard it mentioned before but figured it may be "artistic license" or something or other.

I continue to be amazed by the unknown depths of this hunt. I spent a good hour working on a post to the twintig site, and it didn't go through. I never had trouble posting before. Maybe it is getting too late.

Well, I can always share my thoughts here.

I keep making lists and trying to work in "whole numbers" but I continue to be tempted by "fractional" methods. From a mathematic perspective, the number of possibilities increases with each layer. Add in mirrored or backwardsy sets and shifts and wingdings like the metronome or missing zuchinni the maze grows much much bigger.

This is going to all make sense soon. I'm just hoping mcsweeneys doesn't go out of business first.

5, a good number, could be related to this floor in so many ways aside from it being 5th floor.

RUBIK , 5-letters, it is not so much a square as it is a cube. The SHM for this floor were all "squares". The hunt for the twelve is all about kicking things up a notch. This little multicolored 3-dimensioned-6-sided decendent of an Astralagus would be WAY WAY out of place here if the biddies weren't puzzlers.

Who has any ideas about what this cube might be telling us? Did Dodge mix it up and set it to some elaborite rainbow code? I would really like to know. Any takers?

The photo of the news paper with the obscured name showing ___ Express also lends some support of the cube idea if you think "Exp" = exponent, and puts focus on shifting from a ^2 theme to a ^3 idea.

I'll investigate some options and post later. Heres one to think about right now, the cube root of 9000. 9000^(-3) = 20.8008... Take that apart and you might think of Twintig=20 and "8008" equals an early version of an Intel Processor.

I wrote 'Astralagus' when I meant to write 'astragalus'...and no, I didn't mean to write 'asparagus', but that would be worth considering...

Many months after Christiewags had found the emerald eight in South Beloit, Ill., I noticed that you could make "S. Beloit, Illinois" or "South Beloit, ILL" out of the letters of a relatively short sentence in the text for the Fifth Floor puzzle. This may have been a coincidence, but the sentence was short and odd enough that I thought maybe the authors had planted it as a deliberate clue, or as confirming evidence for anyone who might have doubted the s/h/m numbers hidden in the illustration.

I never finished a full solution for the possible anagram, since the treasure had already been found, but I'll share some of the directions I was exploring. I know that many deducers hate anagrams, so feel free to ignore this. I offer it only as a possible approach for finding confirmation of the final dig site for the remaining treasure hunt.

The potentially relevant words on Floor Five are part of Gus' narration:

Just a bunch of finicky scribbles as far as I could tell

    Juhffck scibsaascul
Illinois / try cubes and table for

Illinois / try jack of clubs flush / Surface Cabbie Stand
Illinois / try jack of clubs flush / barbecue and fascist

    Juabcckyscrbasfaraldl
    Fifth solution lies in cubes

    cffckybfarasclouh adjace
    S. Beloit, Illinois / By ash adjacent crack Curbs Flu Us ff
Clock face has a beryl sunburst / difficult jabs in soil

    afcbbssfarlscau
South Beloit, Ill / drinks fancy juice

    Jusabucffcscibblsasfarasculdeil
    Thirty nine / look

Jusunch f finicy scribbles as far s I culd
    Look at table /

    Jusaucffincycrbblsasfarascull book
