    Default 31 = 1?

I don't know anything about computer languages, but I was checking something on the binary translator and noticed that, next to binary, there is apparently a language called hex. In hex, the number 31 represents the plain text number 1. So the 31s we are seeing in the illustrations could represent 1 if we assume they are in hex instead of in binary code.

Or correct me if I'm wrong.

    TRANSLATOR, BINARY

I feel like I'm going about this the "dirty way" because so many of you have thought of some really intense solves for this floor. My biggest instinct is still for a mm on 1-15 but...

Just to be safe I'm going to drive up 1-15 and if I'm not tired, hitting 1-86 on the way home. It won't be too too long and that way we can cross out at least one of those interstates if I can't find a number.

    Full report tomorrow!

    Default Idaho - Highway 86

    LadyoftheWasatch,

The 2 Rest Areas on Highway 86 look like they have just a few trees. It might not take very long to actually search them, if you find you are up to it. Sounds like it is going to be a long day, so I completely understand why you might not be able to get to these at all.

Here are some pictures of MM 31, just in case. I think MM 19 must be similar.

Good Luck! We'll be waiting for the report! Thanks for sharing with us.

    Good morning!

Yesterday was a beautiful day to be out on the road and my dog and I had a really great time. Unfortunately the only thing we got from the trip was a chipped windshield.

We checked every tree and even looked for nail holes. The hole part was kind of tricky because a lot of the trees had these gnat things that were making nail-sized holes in them to nest. Trying to look for ground that had maybe been disturbed was tricky too because there are lots of mice at the stops and they've dug around the bases.

I feel fairly confident that unless someone removed the marker, that it wasn't where I looked. Which is confusing because that leaves one rest area that hasn't been checked by someone (I-15 mm 167). I started the drive too late and skipped that one so I could eliminate all of I-86. I may go out again for it but I'm not seeing that mm in the picture. Unless you do?

Anyway, I'm going to email my failed hunt story to "Gus" and maybe he'll give us a clue or tell me if the plate went missing. In the meantime...cross these off the list of possibilities:
    I-15 mm 7
I-15 mm 101 (both nb and sb)
    I-15 mm 47
    I-15 mm 25

    I-86 mm 31
    I-86 mm 19

The 86s would've been excellent places to hide it because they had separate historical sites that had extra picnic areas. I really wanted them to be there.

I'm going go back to the drawing board to try to justify driving out just for Idaho mm 167 and check out the Utah theory just in case. If you need to send me out anywhere else...my puff and I are excellent travelers.

    Default Thank you, thank you

    Lady,
You have definitely "gone the extra mile" here!
I am so disappointed that you were not rewarded
with the finding of one of the last 3 treasures.

Thank you so much for taking the time and being
    so thorough in your search.

    Default Why Pennsylvania?

All the numbers in the walls and on top of the machine on this floor are... a map. Pull up a map on your screen showing Scranton, PA; and Binghamton, Schenectady, Albany and Newburgh, NY. There is a five-sided (!) arrangement of highways using all of the numbers in the walls, the 90 in "Fritz 9000", as well as the 84 in binary code on the Tesla Coil.

I interpreted the glowing ball receiving the energy from the Tesla Coil as the treasure site, and it is "located" in the Scranton/Wilkes Barre, PA area.
I don't know whether this link will work, but I thought I might convince some Deducers to focus on some potential PA dig sites if I could show you the pentagonal map I have in mind:
Scranton, PA to Scranton, PA - Google Maps

Look at the illustration for Floor 9, and you can see almost an exact match of the numbers on that floor with the highway numbers on the map:
I-81 Scranton-Binghamton = the script "one" in the wall near the elevator + 8 in the wall near the piggybank or on top of the console with the bell.
I-88 Binghamton-Schnectady = either of the 8's from the I-81 to the red 8 cord behind the answering machine/teleporter.
    I-90 Schnectady-Albany = Fritz 9000
I-87 Albany-Newburgh = This is the weakest link, but the 84 in binary on the Tesla Coil plus three rivets on the side of the machine or three red buttons on the Fritz 9000 could be 84 + 3 = 87. (Or, I suppose, I-90 minus 3 = I-87.) Or maybe we are supposed to use the Taconic Parkway, parallel to I-87, for this leg of the map.
    I-84 Newburgh-Scranton = The binary 84.

One hint that helped me to recognize this map clue was Twintig's reference to the recovered number 9 as a "swinging beacon". This odd turn of phrase had stuck in my mind, but I couldn't figure out what he meant. As I drove home on I-84 from an unsuccessful dig site, however, I saw a big sign for "Beacon and Wappingers Falls" NY. My undying impulse to create anagrams made a "close enough" connection between "swinging" and "Wappingers", and I began to wonder whether this stretch of I-84 was significant.

Doc had been sure that the Logan's Run bathmat represented a state solution, and that the solution was the name of the "star" of Logan's Run: Michael York. I realized he was right - that side of the apartment is "in" NY. I believe that the state line, if you will, runs from the oPEN (Pen = Pennsylvania) kitchen door to the base of the Tesla machine where it appears some insulation is showing along one edge. Below that line, the clues are in Pennsylvania. [Note: The pink donut, representing the hole site, is near the Pen door.]

The illustration on the Twintig website for Floor 9 highlights the energy flowing to the blue ball. This seems like a clue to focus our energy here. Where I went wrong, I believe, is taking the Scranton site too literally. The blue ball could be just getting us over the state line from New York into Pennsylvania. Other clues will pinpoint the highway and mile.

Using Doc's theory about star/art/dart = state clues, I looked at the art below the state line. A framed picture says, "Star Trek". This could be "State RRK". When I googled "RRK," the first link was for a radio station in the Pittsburgh, PA area.

The following anagram beginning with the butcher block in Bakula's kitchen may be too much of a stretch (I know, I know - most of the anagrams are a stretch, but once in awhile I feel like I get a hit).

    Butcher Block =
    Bb choker cult à
    Necklace faith =
    Tea final check à
    End bill =
    Bell din à
    Tinkle

    - also -

    Necklace faith =
    tea chafe clink
    à

    rub bang =
    Bb A rung à
    A Step

    Tinkle + A Step =
    Palettes ink
    Saltine kept
    Patient elks
    State pen ilk
Something related to a pen would be a pencil, and I thought pencil = Pennsylvania. (The use of the letter K in "Khroniker" and "Kheystone" also made me think K = C in some cases, so penkil = pencil.)

Other odds and ends: Could two apes = PA, the 2nd state? The pencil prominently displayed next to Gus' sketch book on the inside front cover also could be a Pencil = Pennsylvania clue. He also tweeted about #2 pencils shortly before the book was released. In the text that goes with Floor 12, Gus notably uses a pencil to point to the alchemy machine. On Twitter, Twintig's hometown is listed as Dutch Oven, PA. I wonder also whether the Pennsylvania allusion in the "legendary Squonk" website that describes a creature that dissolves into tears (tears into clouds? tears of a clown?) is also a PA clue for us.
    http://www.fearsomecreaturesofthelumberwoods.com/

Pennsylvania is also the Keystone State, and Gus had made a point in one post of calling the 12 and the 6 the "kheystones" of the clock.

Strengthening the PA theory is the switchboard. There are rows of seven holes on one side of the upper panel, and six holes on the other side. Pennsylvania has major Interstates numbered 76, 276 and 476. You could make a case for any one of these using the arrangement of elements on the switchboard. Current contenders in my mind are mile 55 on 476 (Allentown) and mile 112 on 76 (Somerset). I checked mile 100 on 476, and there was nothing there - not even a turnout! (Maybe it dissolved into a cloud.)

If anyone is near Allentown or Somerset, I hope you will check the sites and let us know!

    Default I-90 mm 184

    erexere,
If you are referring to the New York I-90 mm 184,
    it is only a turnout..not a full-fledged rest area.
In the past, I believe they have all been actual
rest areas with facilities and park-like settings.

    LadyoftheWasatch,

Wow, 6 Rest Areas searched in one day! You must be exhausted. Thank you so much for taking the trip and sharing the results with us. It seemed very possible that any one of those stops could have been the correct solution. I'm so sorry you came home without one of the Khroniker's treasures. I was so hoping you would.

    Default World Science Fiction Society

Maybe the state clue has something to do with where the Sci-Fi
Conventions are held. Here is some info on one of the largest
    conventions...WorldCon...the convention held by the
World Science Fiction Society to choose the recipients of the
annual Hugo Awards (Science Fiction Achievement Awards)

Here is a link to the cities in which it has been/and will be held.

List of Worldcons by city - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most, if not all of the Sci-Fi movies represented here have won
a "Hugo" or have been nominated for one.

The motto "It is Forever" may have some other associations.
