    Nice thread, Snow.
Here's one of my more recent favorites, if you know what I mean. It's by ee cummings, the poet.

Try www.eecummingsart.com, Paul. His talents are not just limited to words. This particular painting was the inspiration for a poem I posted a while back:

    Subtext of a Fourth Dimension

i circle within the buttery rings of time,
rolling through soft poetry and oils, my ‘twin obsession.’
time rounds in aesthetic orbs; it’s like that,
    not scalar or regimen-ed,
but curvaceous and liquid and tactile.

    alas, like women.

with these hands, i brushed the humid ankles of the moulin rouge stripper,
and later cupped caramel youth in tunisia, before the war marked time scarlet
    for mothers and lovers -
the softer spheres who were razored into befores and afters –
as much as any amputee or shell-shocked hero.
    but before,
    when women were whole,
    i dared.

that is invisible me in the center –
swept in yesterday’s clouds, rain, wind, and mountains -
the vortex of this fourth dimension,
an ageless artist with a pulsing rigor that underlies all art,
the desire to wash all beauty to one single point,
    where intellectual meets physical.

more than just a studious voyeur,
i am a colorful painter who longs to fall prey to
the femme fatale wearing her mourning coat of cream-colored lilies,
lips bitten through and stained toxic, smelling faintly of paris.
i live in the fantasm of psychology within these artful planes,
of nature, of color, of time.

    what I’ve learned:
there is a paper-thin edge between abstraction and reality,
but a world of wonder within
    a woman’s lure.

    Chin Chin by Henry Miller
    from the Insomnia series

I once had the opportunity to view a few of Miller's paintings in a private home (the lady of the house had been one of his mistresses) in the French Alps. One of my favorites was entitled Ship of Fools. But I like this one a lot too.

    Henry Miller once said:

"Paint as you like and die happy."

Now it's my turn to learn something. The signature on the website I found reminded me of something in our copy of Tropic of Cancer. I would not have pegged Miller for such joyful colors in his work, not at all.

I suddenly feel inept. My kingdom for a single talent like these painters. It could be singing, or painting, or poetry; I'd just like to be really good at something tangible. I really wonder what the difference is between someone who sees things sharply and someone who tries to capture that edge.

    Thanks for this thread, Snow.

    starry night--Vincent Van Gogh"

"Vincent/(Starry, Starry Night)" by Don Mclean was like my fav Song when I was little - great idea re new thread ... thx

    Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) Lyrics

    Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer's day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
    Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
    Perhaps they'll listen now.

    Starry, starry night.
    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
    Swirling clouds in violet haze,
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue, morning field of amber grain,
    Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
    Perhaps they'll listen now.

For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
    On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
    As beautiful as you.

    Starry, starry night.
    Portraits hung in empty halls,
    Frameless head on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget.
Like the strangers that you've met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they're not listening still.
    Perhaps they never will... "

    also,

net, love dali impossibly and archaeological reminiscence...is one of my top three (edited to seven!)! totally amazing that you posted that piece! double
