Default 12 Bees in the bonnet!

I believe the word Bee is used only 12 times in the text. I find this interesting.... but what does it mean?

Prologue: Dragonfly, Hummingbird, Butterfly, Firefly, Bee and Ladybug would soon be flying in.

Chp 4: When they arrived at the stump, Dragonfly, already there, hovered impatiently and behind him hovered Bee, Butterfly, Ladybug, Firefly and Hummingbird.

Chp 4: He convinced the furious Spider and Bee not to fly off immediately and attack.

    Chp 6: Everyone was silent.
"It's Spider's fault!" blurted Firefly who slipped behind Bee, trying to avoid an angry stare from several of Spider's eyes.

Chp 6: Off they flew, in pursuit of Zac, with Grasshopper perched on Hummingbird's back, Ant riding on top of the Butterfly, Bee holding on to Snail, the Spider atop the Dragonfly and the heavy Caterpillar carried by both Firefly and Beetle.

Chp 9: "Bee's loud," said Beetle. "Bee? Give it a try." "I'll zzzzzpeak to him," buzzed Bee. "My pleazzzure."

Chp 9: Bee returned to the others.

Chp 10: "I told you he wazz zzztupid," said Bee.

Chp 20: That did it. Everyone was up now. Hummingbird hummed hungrily. "Izzz there honey?" buzzed Bee.

Chp 20: "Don't we have any honeysuckle?" asked Bee.

Chp 20: Then, in through the window and up into the branches, flew a firefly and a beetle, carrying a cater-pillar, a bee, carrying a snail . . . followed by a dragon-fly with a spider on her back, a beetle, and finally a grasshopper riding on a glittering hummingbird.

Interesting that the last bee is not capitalized.

What comments does the forum have on this? Does anyone think it is important? Does it play into the thought that the creatures "disappear" througout the story? Is the "bee" the mate? AND how did these "mates" know to "fly" in, in the Ladybug's 'Group' order?????

debz - keep missing you lol

The lower case letters apply to all the creatures when MS uses them generically. ...flew a firefly and a beetle.... When MS says Beetle he is writing about the creature whose name is Beetle and so on. They appear to be the mates of the named creatures but with the exception of Snail whose husband is also named Snail (p 14), we don't know any mate names. Elsewhere MS caps them when they maybe shouldn't be - p 73 an example with Dragonfly

As to how they knew the flying formation - good question.

Thinking outside the box, this could very well be a great way for MS to have hidden them! So, is it Mr. and Mrs. Snail, or Snail Snail, and Snail Snail?? Could confuse the best of us!!!
Here's a crazy thought: May it is Mr. Zacharia Snail and his beautiful wife, Mrs. Ana Snail.

    YIKES!!

    Hunny,

This characterization of a "glittering" hummingbird also got my attention.
I think it is important, but I don't know how.
Perhaps it is a keyword for a cipher? Maybe it makes an anagram work.
    I haven't figured it out.
What is the sound of one hand clapping?

    debz,
I believe there are 13 bees in the passages you quote. Are you not counting "Bee's loud."? because of the apostrophe + s?
I guess you also chose not to count the reference to the dance which all "bees" use to communicate because isn't a reference to the character?

Chiyo, I actually think I did not count the "bee". I will need to double check, and please ANYONE, double check my counts. It seems to me that perhaps the lower case critters are the mates ???

I also did not count beeswax. (can't remember where that is)
