I realize this post is going to go nowhere, the last thing I want to do is get in a legal argument with anyone, because in fact I am in the middle of a bar review right now and in fact we are revewing criminal law and crimnal procedure, I have been contacted about this issue from the powers that bee and will resolve the issue through them.

good day and good luck in your search...

I could be wrong.. so dont' jump down my throat if I am. I have taken a couple of law classes back in college. And I thought the only claim someone could get for libel was something like defamation of character in such that it was the cause of them being rejected for employment, or something of a similar nature.

I agree though. People are getting a little too worked up about this. After reading the entire story by the person who was actually there. It seems they are fine with the situation and realize that it was their own mistake to open their mouth about it. and if they are fien with it then the rest of us should be... I don't see how MS could honor the find as per the rules set forth within the book that the finder has to prove how they found the token. I don't think.. "someone told me there was a treasure in xyz park so I went down there with my metal detector and found it" fits the description in the rules.. but we shall see.

MS stated over and over again..."If you find a token and don't know how...it your lucky day"

The reason, they "could" be asked to validate their find is so, his wife's hair dresser doesn't turn in 12 tokens. The bee will be awarded to the person who found it, period.

I apologize I have not seen these repeated posts by MS saying he will award the jewel to whoever has the token, regardless of how they found it. I was going on an assumption that I took from reading the rules that are clearly written in the book.

If he has no intentions of adhering to his own rules, then why did he put that in there? Just curious. Why not just say, in the rules, who ever has to the token in hand and calls the number, gets the jewel, no if's and's or buts, provided it was obtained legally of course... why all the stuff about providing proof of how you came up with the location?

the exact reason I stated. he and his wife are the only people who knew where the tokens were hidden at the time of hiding...i.e. she was with him. She has no idea how he formed the puzzles, so if her hair dresser shows up turning in a million dollars worth of tokens and has no idea how she had 12 lucky days...he doesn't have to award the jewels.

what I orginally posted wasn't in a MS post, but word of his mouth at a book signing.

GAM - I'm glad I'm the one that gave you hope on this planet to me that is a treasure worth receiving during this game.

Seriously, I didn't need to watch tv when I came home from vacation...this forum kept me entertained for hours

this seems like it would also pertain to someone who had no knowledge of the book but just heard from a stranger that there was a treasure in their local park.. I don't see a difference. So you are agreeing he doesn't HAVE to award the jewels.. but it seemed like earlier you were saying that he would award the jewels regardless of how the person found the token.. so which is it?

sorry to beat a dead horse here.. but in my own hunt I had wondered if I find something from a 5x5.. and follow that clue to the token.. is that enough to claim the jewel.. at this point I would say any proof that you used the book would be good enough, but from what you are saying.. dublup.. it sounds as tho any person who randomly finds a token can claim the jewel..

I know this is posted elsewhere, but this is what Mike Stadther posted yesterday on the ATT site:

    Everyone:

I know there is some controversy and distress about the claiming the bee token and I would like to give everyone my opinion and thoughts...

    1. I am not involved in any vetting process other than in the area of publicity. I don't discuss the claim with the individuals or validate their claim. I don't discuss how they found it or the process of finding it. I don't discuss other token locations with them and, unfortunately, I can't even congratulate them--someone else from my office does that. The vetting is handled through a separate, nonpartisan law firm.

    2. The Official Rules will be followed with the best sense of fair play. This means that the holder of a token will be declared a finder as long as he or she can establish that he or she found the token through actual skill in the hunt and the clues, and complies with the Official Rules in the book, which in the event of a dispute may be be independently vetted.

    3. If there is collaboration between disputing parties, it is covered by the Official Rule 6, but we will try to help the parties work out a solution between them.

    4. I will try to make this fun and fair for the legitimate finder of a token but please be careful with whom you collaborate and how you share your possible solutions. I know this takes some of the fun out of the hunt but it will avoid disputes.

    5. A charitable contribution will be made in the amount of the cash substitution value for any token that cannot be successfully vetted.

I hope this helps to clarify matters. I wish you all the best. Please continue to have fun!
