Default Question for the Mods Re: No more edits

My question is this. Would you be open to the forum taking a poll on whether or not we would like to have our "edit" capabilities back?

That question of course, has a second part.

If the poll results show that an overwhelming majority vote up that they would like "edit" capabilities back,,,and that the poll has an excellent response as well ,,, yes I know, so far these descriptives are arbitrary but they COULD be qualified...say, by you, the Mods...which qualifiers you could clarify to the voters perhaps,,,,

...then would you consider putting the 'edit' button back ??

Nope, the decision is final. This forum exists to solve the puzzles, and the minor inconvenience of no edits is out-weighed by the major problem of people posting ideas, getting feed back and then deleteing them when they think they're on to something.

If we continued to allow edits and people kept up the nasty trend of "deleting" posts, then this forum would end up being a huge collection of wrong ideas and anything that proved useful or correct would disappear.

This potential problem has been taken care of before a token has been found and thus we've hopefully avoided a problem that could ruin the board and the hunt.

Sorry, but since you don't have to pay to be here, and you don't even have to post, you don't have the luxury to give and then take back.

Well, I tried to ask in the nicest way. I do note however, previously I understood it was the actions of ONE person that precipitated this event.

Now it seems to have changed to be "people". So if you are saying that this has happened repeatedly and habitually then that's a different matter.

I have not seen this taking away of edits done on a forum of this nature before. I have seen people get a 'bug in their bonnet' and delete all their posts from a treasure hunt forum before. But it came and then it went, and the mods did not really react. As a matter of fact, the forum members themselves took the matter in hand and tried to let the person know what that person needed to know. Good or bad, they got the message. Peer pressure prevailed.

It is obviously your choice and I understand the administrative weight you carry. I understand you feel you are doing the right thing for the good of the forum. Not a problem here. As for me, the only reason I, for one, have ever used "editing" is when AFTER the FACT,,,, I felt I have not been clear in what I was trying to say,,,,or that I found it was totally redundant to even bring it up,,,,or if I caught a bad mispelling or grammatical error after the fact and wanted to correct that. So, yes, I miss it personally. I always did PREVIEW my posts as it was, and still do.

So be it, Mods. You'll not hear any more from me on the subject. But,,,,I wanted to say my piece and offer my suggestion for a poll. I did not POST a POLL. I asked. Thanks for listening.

It's an easy way to keep everyone honest IMO. And what are the consequences? You just need to be more careful about what you post in the first place since there will be an immutable record of it. I have no problem with that.

And shame on you who have deleted your previous posts or changed them to 'no message'.

Skoldpadda, i have been guilty of that, but for just cause. somebody saw that they had posted soemthing stupid and wanted to change their message, i told them how to change it, they said thanks but there were now some cluttering messages while we discussed it, so we both erased all that redundant stuff and put **Please delete**

Now, people will have to wade through all that crap, and mods will have a harder time trying to pick out the messages to be deleted, becuase a page later somebody goes "OH MY Gosh how stupid was i can you delete my previous post" Instead of bold letters right on the post, which is much easier to find. I'm not against it, i'm just saying it might be harder for mods n ads, and it may get cluttered faster.

    Just my take on it
    Or am I just paranoid...

    *Of course*

    I think it’s ridiculous.

I think the mods are on a power trip if you ask me. Just look at destructo’s post, Hunnytree asked in a nice way to have it back and he/she comes back with a bad tone.

I’m a big boy and I can tell when someone is full of it by reading his or her posts. I don’t need mods to baby-sit me.

I run many of these phpBB boards, one having 3 times the amount of members that this one does. It was our decision to create the board and we knew the troubles it might bring. If we have a problem with a member we take it up with them on a case-by-case basis away from the board. We for sure wouldn’t punish thousands of members because of one or two bad apples.

Lets face it people make mistakes and need that edit feature.
ok.. I can see I won't get anything done until 2007!

blank, if there are redundancies and you want it deleted just tell a mod or admin. they have done it for me before (for example, I started a redundant forum topic on satellite imagery and cthree deleted it for me after I had asked him).

I don't see how destructo's tone was harsh. It is frustrating when people post a good idea and then delete it afterwards once they get info/ideas from other people. That's not what this community is all about. If it bothers you that the people who run the site want all to have equal access to the ideas on the board, I really can't understand that.

Personally, I like it here and think it was a good move to limit editing privileges.

It's a free site to all. I think if you were a paying member you'd have more right to complain and I respect everyone's opinions here even if I don't agree with them all. These guys not only provide a fun and free place to discuss ideas but they also put a lot of time and effort into it. Moreover, they have contests and give away prizes

I have a difficult time being irate about that

let me start by saying everything i deleted concerning the hunt has been posted somewhere else...if it weren't for the "nm" you wouldnt know my posts were missing in most threads....I left all threads I started so you could see why I started them and what direction I wanted them to go...

just so you all know it is false what some of you are implying (that I deleted posts because I gained info from a board member and used it towards a theory of mine)...I have very limited time to work on this hunt at the moment...I highly doubt with the time I put into this hunt will yield any tokens....my motives were not to decieve or harm anyone...it was actually more of a karma issue for me....my tone in most of my posts was uncalled for

if everyone thinks this has tainted the forum perhaps you should just vote to remove me from it....I caused this, I will be willing to deal with the consequences...however, I for one believe most members overeacted to the deletions, thinking they missed out on something important and they now missed their chance to capatilize upon it...although I can understand why the mods would be concerned for another reason...

Once again, I didnt think I was onto something big...sorry to those of you that feel harmed in some way....to others who are casting their shame upon me I will give you this smiley hope it makes you feel better...
