    Default Rusty @ NSA

I went to NSA to visit the National Cryptologic Museum yesterday. It was really great. Bigger than I expected. I highly recommend anyone interested in crypto to visit there if they get the chance.

I snapped a couple of pictures of the NSA building on my way in, and the NSA police stopped me on my way out. I actually had a Maryland state police cruiser and two NSA federal police cars hold me in the parking lot for about a half hour. It was pretty weird. They made me delete the two photos of their building from my digital camera.

So, if you go there, don't take any photos of the NSA building.

Very cool. One question though...how'd you get all those pictures of the supercomputers in my basement?

So they made you delete the photos of the outside of the building but let you keep all the ones inside? That's wild. Thanks for the photos!

Sadly, those computers are late 80's/early 90's era supercomputers. Your typical mid-sized company today has that level of processing power in the backoffice. They were very cool, though. I especially like to see the copper-plumbed cooling hardware at the base of the Cray. I did not realize before, but those blue panels in a ring around the Cray are bench seats for sitting. A old Cray would make quite the conversation piece in your living room, not? Maybe they have one on eBay?

Little known fact: that copper refrigeration tubing was actually for the Margarita dispenser on the back side of the machine. Agents who sat on the blue benches waiting for results needed refreshment, so the government made them build in a drink dispenser.

On a more serious note, i agree with spiderman, that's kind of weird that they'd make you delete photos of the outside building. I mean, there are lots of photos of the place, why would they care about yours? Strange.

spiderman, They deleted the photos of the outside of the NSA building. Not the ones from the museum, which is across the street. They were pretty cool about it. It was dipshit detail for the cops. They knew it and I knew it. They had to act stern and serious even though we all knew they were just going through the motions. I told them right off the bat I understood their situation. I actually felt kind of bad wasting their time like that.

You see, the thing most people don't realize is that it is not photos of the building that they don't want you to have. Heck, they sell books in the museum gift shop with photos of the building on the cover. There are no national secrets to be given away by photographing the building. It is the fact that you might be photographing NSA employees and/or their vehicles. They don't want their employees to become espionage targets. I wasn't thinking when I snapped the photos. I should have realized.
