    Default Numb...

Life has taken some really hard turns lately. I know I haven't been here much "in print", though I have peeked in a few times.

We got our son off to college, and our girls ready for school. I felt like we were running in the car every single day. My husband's hours were cut, which put a real strain on our finances. Thank God, he's back to a normal work week, but we had to use the credit card WAY too much to get by.

My brother got into still ANOTHER legal mess, and my Mom was freaking out while my sister just got mad.

I finally got the girls off to school, and discovered that our senior daughter was having some problems. We're still dealing with that, and she'll need some counseling soon.

Then I got in here and found that Sue's dear husband died in a car accident, and it was more than I could bear. I've grown so close to Sue in these last months, and I have nothing I can do to help her. Prayer, yes, but to lose a husband when you have so many "little ones" at home... You have to try and hold everything together when you're broken, yourself.

    And then Katrina, too.

    *SIGH*

I know not everyone here prays, but a great many do. Those who do, please remember Sue and her family as well as the victims of this hurricane.

    (((((((((((((((((((((Sue and children)))))))))))))))))))))))))

I love you like a sister...

Yeah I know life can be such a bummer sometimes. I think I'm just now learning to really appreciate that Serenity prayer that I memorized from a plaque on my wall when I was little--

"God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
and Wisdom to know the difference."

All three of those are hard for me--especially the Courage part! Although I've always had some disagreements with my mother, I appreciate her thoughtfulness to put that plaque on my wall when I was growing up, because it's a good thing to keep in my head. Anyway I hope the going gets smoother for you and yours!

...and the tretchery to hide the bodies of those we had to kill along the way!

I know it always seems like the things we want to have the closest to us are so often ripped away, and the things we aim to avoid are all to often thrust upon us.

If there isn't a plan or a meaning to what is thrust upon us, at least take comfort in knowing that we can always put a meaning and a plan into how we respond. Diamonds aren't formed without pressure, mountains don't rise above without friction, and as time washes over us, all we can do is reach out and grab a little bit of it to reflect.

It seems that a dark cloud has passed over so many of my friends on this board, and it pains me that others are in pain. I look forward to when you can all rejoin us with smiles and frivolity. After all, isn't this supposed to be about dreams of fortune and grandure? Some times a big dose of reality is hard to swallow, but we'll be here for you when you get your sweet tooth back.

I wonder if I can work in another metaphor before I close? Ugh. Sigh.

You know, as I'm setting up the new board, I just realized something about priorities.

In the middle of this hunt, if you asked me what the most important thing about tweleve is.... I probably would have said "all the posts, of course." And sure, when the goal was to get some tokens and win some money, all those good ideas were perhaps the value here.

Now, we have every answer that we wanted those many months ago. It's all here, the entire record of the hunt. Every question. Every Answer. And sure, they won't get the rest of us $1 any more. But that's not why they've been replaced as the most valuable thing here.

Somewhere along the way, we became more than the posts, more than the theories. During our first member tragedy, I wondered, "How do I handle this? What is the role of this board? Isn't it out of place or not in proper etiquette to discuss this on a forum designed for a treasure hunt? How can I prevent inappropriate posts from callous idiots that could really hurt an already bereaved member?"

But you proved to me that the worry was needless. You were mature, you were caring, and you made this forum a warm and comforting place. This wasn't just some fringe benefit of the board, it became the heart of the board. The lessons of that loss were many, and I no longer have to ask those questions. The answers to Stadther's hunt were interesting, but the answers to "how do you reach out to a physical stranger who is an intellectual intimate?" and "what is the greater good to this place" were the true treasures.

Back to those priorities I talked about in line one... the above just hit me as I'm backing up the site and setting up a clean install.... the first and really only part that I cared to preserve...above all... was that list of members. You all showed that losing a week of posts was easily overcome. But I don't know how I'd ever reassemble 11,245 people who I'd like to talk to every day, listen to every day, and go find some more treasure with!
