    Hey everybody -

How much do you need to raise? Ball park figures are ok.

How quickly do you need to raise the cash?

What is the general purpose for the cash to be raised?

    Brady, thanks for your interest.

Faster would be better. I'm trying to help out a friend who's seriously strapped right now due to circumstances beyond her control. (The situation goes further downhill with every passing day.)

As far as the amount, more is better. If I could somehow raise a significant amount, that would provide start-up funds for several business opportunities that are knocking. Short term, dinner is an issue. Long term, I'd like to put her on her feet again.

I would like to be very clear that I'm not asking for donations. Don't want to get into that. I was just wondering if all these out-of-the-box minds could help me think of ways to help her.

    Thanks so much.

    Carol

If she's ill, or been ill, people around where I live do fundraiser dinners (spaghetti is a good choice, because you'll get better profits) or auctions.  Businesses will sometimes be willing to donate for a good cause, and for a plug in any advertising you would do for the event.  If she has been ill, she might be eligible for disability or unemployment, depending on your states laws, but those programs tend to take a few weeks (up to six) to get you any money. She also might be eligible for food stamps and that might be something she could get immediately to help her out (I know some people have issues with taking help like that, but if she's truly in need...maybe you'll be able to talk her into it).  I'd contact a few local agencies/food shelves and see what's out there to help her until she gets back on her feet.

There are several companies that don't require a lot of start-up funds to sell their products, but they are companies where you have to host parties and really sell the product. One is lavender-love.com (lavender bath products), stampin up (scrapbooking) (I don't rep either of these, but have seen them A LOT). Check out www.mompack.com and go through the message boards. There are SAHM there presenting lots of opportunities through different companies that might be of some help.

This is way out of the box, but I've done it.

Get some people together ASAP (because of Halloween) and do an egg sale for charity. You can dress up, etc, to make it fun. You go from door to door. At the first house, ask for an egg. At the next house, offer to sell the egg for $.25 or $.50 or even $1. Make sure that you let them know it is for good cause and promise you won't throw the egg at the house. Rinse and repeat.

We had fun with that in High School (hundreds of years ago). One house claimed to not have any eggs, so when we got one from the neighbor, we went back and sold it to them.

I don't know how that might be received 'round your parts, but our small town had fun with it. It's more for some seed money, than large profits. We had teams break up into different areas and compete to see who could make the most the fastest.

Without knowing any details, if her spouse has died, and she has children, each of those children are entitled to Social Security Survivor Benefits until they're at least 18 yrs old (don't remember the exact age... might be older if they're still in school). Everyone else, keep that in mind, too. Been there, doing that!

OK, so she's given me 'permission' to give details.  I didn't want to breach her privacy before.

This is a woman with a pretty good job.  She makes good money.  Her husband had a good job and made good money.  They decided to have children.  Lots.  The husband became disabled in a work accident.  Workers' Comp hasn't yet paid.  They're on their third appeal.

The trouble with a lot of aid is that it isn't extended when one parent has a decent job, or when both parents still live at home.  So the situation is that horrible middle ground, where things were great once and keep slipping downhill.

They're at the point of wondering if they will have dinner, and with each passing day, all my friend is swallowing is her pride.   You can see that it's a sticky situation.

She's tried all the pastor's discretionary funds.  She's working with the Small Business Administation to secure a loan so that her husband can take advantage of new opportunities that lay before him.  She's gone to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and the local food pantry.

All I can say here is that this woman is doing everything right, and the temporary circumstances that belie her are just too much.

So I hope that helps.  I guarantee that she'd appreciate any ideas!

    Thanks again, everybody.

    Gosh, that's horrible.

If she hasn't already, she should contact her creditors (credit cards, mortgage company, etc) and see about postponing payments because of job loss. Most credit card companies carry this protection (for a fee) but they might be willing to work with her...as some money is better than no money.

Tell her to hang in there...something is bound to break in her favor.
