    Default faith

Bass, what a wonderful analasis. Never looked at it that way, just always knew the definition of faith was the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen. And the verse that says without faith you can't please God. There's the story of Doubting Thomas where he questioned the resurrection of Christ and he said he would have to put his hands into the scars themselves to believe. Then Jesus told them it was more blessed that there would be others that would believe without having to have that physical proof.

When I was little, I respected God so much I wouldn't shine a flashlight in the sky because I was afraid I would shine it in his eyes and cause him to squint. I don't remember never having faith. I guess its something I've taken for granted. I would feel so hopeless without Him in my life.

I'm a proactive person. I guess I've transferred that proactive stance even to my spiritual life. I want to make the necessary arrangements
and as it says, without the promise we would be of most men, miserable.

By the way, have you guys heard the new song out by Brooks and Dunn called "I Believe." It runs cold chlls through me. Listen to it if you have a chance. Anyway, thanks for the words. Peg

    (smiling quietly to myself here...)

This is an argument I've heard before... 'proof robs faith.' As much as I would like an easy answer to that, I am not sure it's so easy. Does proof negate faith just by it's very nature? Perhaps technically, yes. I don't think that your faith is at all diminished by proof, however. Seems to me that a little miracle here and there keeps us all looking for more. Keeps us believing, talking, searching. And isn't searching a key component to both proof and faith?

Spiderman, there is proof. It just wasn't in our lifetime. That's what makes it difficult. The scriptures are full of miracles to make people believe. Just think; floods, burning bushes, parting of seas, angels speaking directly to people, people dissapearing into thin air, people being healed, being fed by the thousands on practically nothing, coming back from the dead. The list goes on an on. I could probably name you a few I've seen in my own lifetime. Have I ever turned from God. You bet!
Steve said it best, Peggy without God, bad. Peggy with God, good.

God could speak a zillion "proof" miracles into existance, but then we would be servant to him by force, not by choice. He made us a "free moral agent." That means He made it available for us to choose Him on our own. Our choice. No force. The other way would only scare people into believing. Once the fear subsides, you would go back to your old ways. Loving you and providing you with his comforting Spirit is a much better way. Out of the thankfulness for his blessings, I am happy to give him my little mustardseed of faith in exchange for his wonderful promises.

Millions of parents go to bed every night loving their children. They could do things to FORCE them to live their ways in their household, but it would only cause hate toward that parent. And millions of kids leave home and get into bad things in life because they don't want to accept the love their parents have nor their direction. Until they are a parent or adult, they are not going to uderstand that level of love. Most kids just want the monetary proof of love, gifts, cars, money, etc.

A gift is not a gift until its received. Love is only good if it goes both ways. Think about personally. You can love others, but they don't always love you back. You can go on loving that person, but it doesn't grow as well. Its not as fulfilling. Then, when you find someone who loves you back equally, well, WOW! Then its really special.

Well said, benzleasr! I do see proof of God everyday...I see it in my childrens' smiling faces every morning, the sunrise, the sunset, ect. Miracles are all around us on a daily basis, you just have to look for them.

Some wisdom from my Mom...You can read the Bible front to back on a daily basis, go to church every day. Does that make you a good Christian? No, not until you live the words in the Blble are you a good Christian.

It's kind of funny - I know what you (or more accurately your mother) is saying, but technically anyone who lives the words in the Bible wouldn't call themselves good!

Mark 10:17-18 As He was going out on the road, a man ran up, knelt down before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" But Jesus asked him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One--God.

Romans 3:18 ...there is no one who does good, there is not even one.

Thanks the Lord that we don't need to be good to receive his grace.

    Steve

p.s. I see Carol's point about proof not necessarily negating faith, but I think faith wouldn't be as strong with it. I think we see miracles more often than we give credit for, and call them "concindences". I was having a conversation with my best friend a month or two ago, who happens to be a die-hard skeptic. Something in the realm of an inexplicable miracle was brought up, and his response was "I have complete faith that science will be able to explain this some day!".

Steve, there's a church sign here that reads "Coincidences are when God chooses to remain anonymous."

Not the same church, but pretty funny! Maybe there's a sign syndicate out there.
