In private discussions with many of you, I have found that a lot of you don't have time or the need for religion. The promise made for a monotheistic society is perhaps the biggest puzzle of all to me, and I was hoping we could hold a respectful discussion on our views.

If you're willing, I'd really like to know what comforts you find in your particular religion, and what brought you to that denomination or group. If you would rather, tell me why you are turned off by the whole thing.
A few of you have shared personal stories with me and they really are fascinating.

I do realize this is a risky topic, but you all think more broadly than most and so I'd like to know what you think.

    Thanks in advance for sharing.

Spiderman, very gutsy question. I like that about you. Ok, I'll go first. I'm sure approaching this question is much like touching a cactus, but for me, my belief and my faith is my rock. I wouldn't leave home without it! I'm proud to say that I'm a Christian and I belong to a Christian Disciple of Christ Church which pretty much accepts all denominations and is very open. I feel if we can't be open here on Earth, how do we ever expect to commune in the next life.

And you were gutsy enough to answer... I like that about you!

I am fully aware that this is a briar patch for some, and I respect that. It's just that when you find yourself in some great hall with people you've grown to respect, you feel comfortable broaching subjects that are a little prickly. I'm certainly not out to convert anyone, or to force my views on them. It's just the opposite, really - I'm asking you to share your views with me, so that I can gain another perspective.

    Thanks to all who share.

I, too, am a Christian, and I go to a basically Baptist church that also accepts all denominations. I don't know what I would do without my faith and relationship with Jesus. Well, actually, I do know - I would be a mess. I went through a long time in my life where I put God on the back burner, and my life was a complete mess. Now that I have Him back in my life, things are much better and I am able to cope with life's difficulties much better as well.

I also think we need to be very open. After all, we are not supposed to judge anyone for anything. It's not our job. We are supposed to love all people.

Hey, Spiderman, would you mind sharing the particulars of your faith? I don't think you mentioned it in your original post?

No, I don't mind. In no particular order, I've been Baptist, Moravian, Methodist, and lost!

It would take a pretty long time to explain the details of this, but I've recently attempted to delve into the why's of my choices. I inherited a few beliefs, but have actively made decisions about my faith (whether to have any, for instance...) and am at a crossroads of sorts personally.

It's becoming an all or nothing thing for me, whereas before I could let things ride and dismiss faith as an inconvenience or as unimportant. By nature I analyze things to death, and of course, spirituality isn't always open to that. I'm mostly trying to figure out why I do the things that I do, and whether a different path daily would really make that much difference to me and others.

For those of you who don't know, I work in a church. When I took the job, I was greatly worried that I might somehow confuse a salary for the sacraments, and lose all the wonder I felt in the worship services. Much to my great surprise, I have felt just the opposite. Being behind the scenes as much as I am allows me to see exactly how fervently my co-workers believe in what they're doing, and that actually adds to the feeling that God is present in our services.

All that said, I still struggle a little bit with proof and with facts and with the need to spreadsheet something. The MBA in me can't reconcile the lack of data, as I'm just learning, but the deepest part of me wants to help others in need.

I've seen our church provide miracles to others, whether it's supporting a new mom with infant triplets, or fully outfitting three apartments for Katrina victims (in less than 24 hours!). I so strongly believe in this part of religion that it's making me want to investigate the more historical aspects, and I have finally found a facility where I feel an overwhelming sense of peace upon entering that it makes me want to stay.

I had to speak at church twice this weekend, and nearly fainted in doing so. I am just not a public speaker. But I think my lesson there was that it wasn't my message, and I should get over myself. I so want to separate my petty list of grievances and a sense of entitlement from religion!

My job stretches me to the limit, every day, and it is exhausting at times for me. I so want to make a difference to others. Not to be a preachy Christian, and definitely not to convert, but because I honestly believe that every person is deserving of my affection. I just think we all have a deep responsibility to take care of each other, and I'd like to make that my life's work.

So you can see, I have a lot on my mind.

    Thanks for asking.

Something you might have overheard Christ say after one of his tiring days with the mobs:

    Dreams really do come true!
