Default 4th grade class treasure hunt

Just thought I'd throw this out there for any "teachers" or other interested folk. I teach 4th grade in Southern Oregon and have had the "hidden treasure" bug my whole life. (thanks dad) I really got in to ATT this past year with my 8 year old son.

This year I decided to do a treasure hunt for my 4th grade class, to spark higher level thinking skills and teamwork. Also, to just have some plain old fun!

If you are interested in checking out the hunt, most of it is online on my classroom website:
    http://www.grantspass.k12.or.us
-place curser on "schools" and navigate to "Redwood School."
-in the upper left hand menu click on "teacher pages."
-find and click on "4th Mr. Clark"

From this point you can follow the links in the left hand menu under my name. There are some "hidden" clue links that only activate after you get to certain pages. If you follow them in order, you can see the entire hunt so far. (except for the yet to be found clues.)

The kids work in teams of 4. After so long, I'll post the next clue on the website simply to catch up the rest of the class. (Some teams get farther than others.) I always give the teams that are ahead plenty of time to try and solve things first before I post the next clue. All the clues were placed well in advance.

Anyways, I just thought I'd share. If there are any teachers in here, I know how things can get in the middle of the year. Doing this treasure hunt has helped to spark imagination and fun in my classroom. (not only for my students, but myself as well!) Enjoy!

if you are having trouble with #8, don't think too hard... mr. clark has made this hunt for 4th graders, and i think he's doing a great job keeping it fairly easy!

jclark...What lucky kids to have a teacher like you! Too bad you don't teach at my kids school! Have they mastered that cloning thing yet?

Haha Thanks! Two girls in my class figured out the latest clue, and found the "treasure" to finish up part one of the hunt today! I'm so proud of them! I've updated the site a bit with the solution to the latest clue. More pictures and info will be posted tomorrow. Part Two begins soon! The fun is just beginning!

That is such a great idea. We need more teacthers like you in our school systems. My mom is a Sunday school teacher, I will have to show her this. Great idea for a church activity while the "grown-ups" are attending service!

    Fantastic Mr. Clark

It is obvious you love what you do and here are a couple of fitting quotes for you.

"Wise teachers create an environment that encourages students to teach themselves"

"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell, where his influence stops."

I can only hope that my 6 year old son has teachers like you throughout his education.

    Bravo Mr. Clark...Bravo!

.........time to add a DAR ring to my collection.........

Thanks everybody! Stay tuned...Part Two begins this week!

I'm currently working on writing some curriculum using a "treasure" hunt as the focus. Sort of like a "Treasure Hunt in a box." A skeleton plan that will allow any teacher to simply fill in the "blank plan" or storyboard skeleton. (Basically an organizer.) It will be filled with many ideas to get the ball rolling, and ways to incorporate the grade level's curriculum into the hunt. It will also have references to different types of codes and ciphers to use, with a section on symbols. (ways to hide clues)

This way a hunt can be created by individual teachers or grade levels that will be leveled to specific grades and age groups. I'll keep you all posted on it's progress!
