Default i need your help and ideas, please

my gr-daughter is 11 yrs old. her horse-riding camp had a major fire in january, and lost the barn and all its contents. the insurance is covering none of the tack, food etc. it doesn't cover much of anything. the owner thought barn and accessories meant it did, but does not. my gr-daugher has been trying to raise money by having a white elephant table at the school winter fair, and collecting returnable bottles and cans from her neighborhood. what i'm asking for is ideas to earn money to help out. the owner has 18 horses that were mostly rescued horses. she needs help with food, and boarding them. it's very expensive, but even if marissa can buy 1 bag of oats, she'll be happy. it's not time to be doing a car wash right now. temps are really low. any ideas?? thanks to all of you. becky

If you're active at church, try this. It's a little risky, but with the right group, it's great fun. Give everybody in your Sunday School class $5 and ask them to make it multiply. Folks can use it to make a poundcake, and then sell it for $12. You get the idea. Make sure they have a deadline for this, and make sure they know all the money is going for the stable.

Coffee and donuts are great fundraisers for a captive audience. You just need to find that place that will let you sell. Elections are ideal, but seeing how it's February, probably not a good idea. Figure out where folks would go on a Saturday morning in your community and camp out there.

Get your daughter to search for 4 leaf clovers and sell them for St. Patrick's Day. A kid down the street made $50 in one day doing this! She could also provide some leprechaun mischief for a price - I have a TON of ideas on that subject. Magic pudding, lep traps, etc... Maybe there is a group who'd pay for some fun. Or maybe her own school would let her 'sell' construction paper clovers for support - $1 each.

If the owner of the stable would be willing to share her tax ID number with you, you could solicit donations from area businesses. Most require the tax ID number in the form of a letter. WalMart especially is good about donating to groups. I've also worked with Blockbuster, BJ's, and area grocery stores. All have contributed nicely given the correct information.

If the stable owner goes to a church, you might approach that senior pastor to see if there is a discretionary fund to help her out.

Hope that helps! It sounds like your daughter has a generous heart. Congratulate her for me on a job well done.

Take a pic of the burnt stable and put it on flyers and post them around your community with a contact number where they can make donations.

Contact Petsmart and Petco - in some areas of the US they have stores with feed, supllies for large animals and if you contact their corporate offices they may send you some free stuff!

Advertise in your local paper with info on how they can contribute.

Bake Sale's at a local church or outside a grocery store

Talk to neighbors about donating items for a community garage sale and ask a local school if you can use their parking lot for the event.

    I will keep thinking!

One of my favorite fundraisers is the 'Kiss the <insert animal here>' You find an animal small enough to carry around (we used a chicken, guinea pig and a lizard) Setup a day to go around to local businesses, make sure you take advantage of an entire business day as you will tend to get better results. Start off with a few name referrals from the group (friends of the family, neighbors, etc.) and head to the business. Once arrived and met up with the desired person say you were sent by friend (you can give up the name after they paid or kissed) and that they either have to 'Kiss the <animal>' or give 5$. If they do either one they can give you a name and send you to another person, if they dont then turns out to be a bogus lead but they cant send you to someone else. Its really nice if you get to attorney's office or one with cubicles as the people tend to give you names of their co-workers to bug. Overall the kids have a huge blast carting around little critters and getting adults to kiss them. Just a suggestion

Feed stores for large animals may be willing to help out.

    Default horses

Is it possible to have a horse petting zoo with the horses in trouble?
Sell tickets to possibly just pet their noses.

Advertise to "Save the Horses" and let the people in the community see the animals first hand with the horse petting zoo or rides, if possible.

Make up small bags of oats in pretty cloth bags and let the children sell them to "feed the horses." Set up stations at grocery stores, retail stores, churches, etc. The money made can then be taken to buy larger bags of feed.

Have your granddaughter and her friends send letters to Horse Riding Clubs nationally to see if anyone will help. There should be hundreds riding clubs and/or addresses on the net.

Contact Quaker Oats. Let your granddaughter plea her story. You never know? At least they may have a donation of goods not consumable by humans.

Put up a Mail Box at the Riding stable and ask those who are boarding their horses to donate.

There are plenty of animal lovers out there. Sent letters to national pet chains. Send a letter to MS. Maybe Pook would like to help a little girl with a big heart.

    e-mail me at: benzleasr@aol.com

I'll send her $10.00 to buy a bag of oats! I admire her efforts.

    Default ideas for horses fund

thank you all for your ideas to help raise money. marissa will be sooo happy to try just about anything to raise money for them. she's willing to go the extra mile for anything she's involved with. scouts, year book staff, school, chorus, band, bake sales, etc. she has a lot of energy and throws herself into every project. she's small for her age, but she's dynomite! the barn is burned level, and will cost $8,000. to $20,000. just to clear out before trying to re-build. boarding them elsewhere is $100.00 per horse, per week. the owner is devastated. hope we can make a difference with your ideas. expecting snow from thurs. to sunday here in Maine, so that may slow things down a bit. also, just went through the yearly girl scout cookie thing, so, hard to just ask family, friends, in-laws, outlaws, and neighbors for donations. lol. thank you all again for your input and friendship. we'll be in touch.

    Becky and Marissa;

I'd just like for you to know that from my perspective this is nothing at all like Girl Scout cookies - it's not an obligatory fundraiser. This is a project with passion, and I'd support you faster than you could imagine, even if I had just given you my cookie check. People WILL embrace the concept of a little girl who wants to help somebody else. It's hard to turn down a good heart.

And if you get us a paypal link, I'd bet the folks on tweleve would get you started. At least a little bit. (Try Bass021 - he's an official OAT!)

    Best wishes!

Official OAF is more like it!

And to call me the Official OAT must have come from the Department of Redundancy Department. (If anyone remembers what OAT stands for, they'll know what I'm talking about!)
