    Default Time Capsules

I'm putting together a time capsule and was wondering where I might be able to find all those 'yearbook' stats, like the avg. cost of a gallon of milk, a car, a gallon of gas, etc. Any ideas? I'd rather not go track them down personally if possible.

Also, what ten things you would put in a time capsule? Space is not an issue.

    Thanks everybody.

I have never done a time capsule - but it seems like an exciting opportunity

I think a current newspaper would be logical - wold have classifieds - advertisements - news - etc

can't wait to read what others suggest

What a fun idea Carol! I might just scale it down a bit and add the
idea to our summer roster. Each of the kids can do one for THEIR
kids to open and learn about the previous generation. Sounds more
fun than just a simple scrap book.

Anyway, it might be cool to just throw in one of your receipts from
the grocery store to show current prices, dates, time and location.
Most of the stores have started to identify each item right on the
receipt for easy reference. I would probably include a photocopy
of the same receipt since some tend to fade away over time.

Another idea could be coins. Find the oldest dated coin you can
find and also include a new one. This will show the date range
of currency access. A mint set of the state quarters would be
    cool too.

Toy store ads would be a good one. We all look back and think of
the popular toys of our childhood. All the sale papers are geared
towards the hottest trends and prices so that would be an easy entry.

I agree that a current newspaper would be great. If you can find
past articles on major events within the last year it would be a plus.
You could find things like the current war in Iraq, the devastation in
    New Orleans, etc.

Just my immediate thoughts, hope they help.

Hmmm...I tried to Google facts for 2006 (yearbook stats) but no luck...I will keep trying.

10 Things I would put in a time capsule:

    *copy of recent newspaper
    *my favorite cd
*current currency - cuz it keeps changing
    *my favorite shirt
    *my favorite book
*a note to my future kids about what is going on in my life at the time
    *poetry
    *journal
    *current family photo
    *tabloid magazine
    Like Contests???
    Then check this out!

Thanks everybody - this is a project for my youngest. We're just shelving a cookie tin until she turns 21. Each of the family has written a letter to her and we've got all sorts of photos as well. I'm going to get her to complete a list of Favorites, too. Definitely coins, although I can't imagine they'll change all that much in just 16 years. Thanks for all your help!

I'm a gadget freak and thought of your time capsule when I saw this article yesterday.

    http://gadgets.fosfor.se/gadgets-now-and-then-part-1/

I can't even imagine how primitive our current hi-tech stuff will look 16 years from now.

I was going to suggest you put open a bank account or buy a CD and put the paperwork there to see what happens in 16 years. But I did the math and a $100 investment now at 3% turns into a WHOPPING $161! Never mind.

What a great idea - the bank account would be fun to find at 21, anyway. I don't know anybody who'd turn down $161.

The gadget link was fun, too. A list of the latest technology would be great fun to include. You're right, Nodon, this sector will show the greatest evolution in that time period.

    Thanks for your help!

What your looking for is an Almanac, there are quite a few out there but most of them should have the basic statitistics.

I would put in some current music, top ten list maybe?

    Default Time Capsule

The time capsule idea is wonderful! A friend gave my husband and I a time capsule when we were married, to be filled with all kinds of things, then opened in 10 years. Last week, we had the joy of opening the capsule. We had included pictures, statistics, and mementos from our wedding, but the most wonderful thing inside was a letter from one of our groomsmen. He wrote us a play-by-play summary of our wedding day from his perspective. It was hilarious, moving, and insightful. When we finished reading his account, my husband and I were both laughing so hard we cried.

That said, I recommend that at least one of the letters you enclose in the time capsule should be memories of the day your youngest was born, from a very different point of view (perhaps a sibling?)... if the birth was pleasant enough to allow for such a thing.
