    Default anyone here know Latin?

Hi--I haven't been to Blunt Chisel for ages. But I was at a thrift store here the other day, and found this mysterious blue bottle for five bucks. It has these Latin words on a brass coat of arms medallion attached on the front, with these words under the coat of arms--

    MEMORIANDUM IN PELAE

Any idea what could that would mean exactly? I think it's probably something like "a memento..." I think "pelae" comes from a root word meaning "to exile" or something like that, is that right? My first thought is it's a souvenir bottle for someone who was immigrating from that country, and that it held water or wine for them to remember that region by.

The coat of arms looks a whole lot like the British coat of arms, but instead of a lion and unicorn facing each other with a shield in the center, it's two lions around the shield, and there are other little differences. Also, there's a ruby-like "gem" attached to the left center of the shield. Not holding my breath that it's real, although it does really sparkle.
Anyone know what coat of arms this could be?

I would attach a picture, but can't with my Web-TV. Just really curious what the story might be behind it. The bottle looks old, it's about 10 inches tall, and square, made out of thick wavy glass. Anyone have any theories, especially on the Latin meaning, or the coat of arms?

It's really odd-looking to say the least!

Thanks netsirk, thanks holli! Well, the medallion is brass (I guess brass, it's shiny gold like brass) so no color. The coat of arms has generally the same look as the British coat of arms, with the same crown on top, and the same shape shield with four segments, etc. But the shield is different in that there is a fifth segment across the bottom with what I think is laurel leaves, or maybe oak leaves. The motto is right under the leaves. As for the shield's four divisions, the top right has a single lion, the bottom right has three fleur de lis (or are they just crosses). The top left has what looks like three small lions standing on top of each other. The bottom left is hard to tell because the "ruby" there takes most of its space.

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but "ruby" is supposed to symbolize "freedom". Another theory I have is this could be connected to some religious sect who was exiled. This thrift store is run by a Catholic church. I'm in south Texas, and I know in the 1800's there were a diverse groups of people who moved to Mexico to get away from political trouble in the US. I don't know, it's a mystery. The coat of arms does seem connected to Britain somehow, maybe a specific region.

The bottle looks to be from before 1900 because the seam doesn't go all the way up through the lip, but probably after 1860 because the seam goes all the way up through body up to the lip.

Thanks for your ideas. Yay internet! I did a search on google for "in pelae" and a link did come up for German e-bay, where apparently someone has advertised this same bottle--"flasche...goldwrappen". I'll have to find a German-English dictionary to see figure out what all it says. Now I'm just trying to find it on that large page, it's hidden in there somewhere. Maybe there's a picture. If do a google search for "in pelae", it will call up 2 entries, and it's the 2nd one.

So maybe then I'll know what on earth this is. I sure wish Clue 3 for ATT would have been this easy to solve!

Nothing had come up for "memoriandum in pelae", but I had forgotten to do a search for just "in pelae".
