Default Big Woods Cemetery Post Rita

Well, it's almost been a year since I started working on Big Woods cemetery and Tweleve came to my aid. So, I thought I should give a State of the Cemetery address. First I must share some very sad news. Our treasurer and gate keeper and my very dear friend Ray McClelland recently passed away. To share his personality with you, he didn't like many people...he was a codgy old man with few friends. But those friends he did have were true. And I am blessed to have counted myself as a true friend. We loved each other and found joy in each others company. I truly miss the old toot. On better notes, we finally found a caretaker for the cemetery that really cares for the cemetery. He has a vested interest in it. In short, he's like me and Dean, he holds the place in his heart. As a result, the overall maintenance is the best that it has been in years. The bulbs and seeds and flowers that Tweleve people sent are now safe and sound in the cemetery. When they began arriving, it was in the dead of a Louisiana summer...in short it was just too hot to plant them in the ground without constant supervision and expect them to live. There was also no way that I could care for them with my black thumb and expect them to live beyond 1-2 weeks. Enter stage left, my momma. She can make plants grow in concrete. And, until now she has had no way to help with the cemetery project. She took all the flower products and nursed them until the relative "cool" of our late autumn. By that time, they had matured enough to make it on their own in the cemetery grounds. She then made beds for them at designated places and there they thrive. I can only say thank you to all you you who have helped to beautify the Big Woods cemetery. Yes, there are still up turned graves and over 90 stumps in the cemetery, so yes there is still much more work that needs to be done...but as many of you know, it is a free cemetery. The cost charged is $4.00 per year per site for the upkeep of each plot. So there will be many fund raisers and many more volunteer hours before it can be completely finished. We have decided that we will have a yearly work weekend in March of each to commorate and continue progress. But, the community and friends like you will continue to help with the reconstruction that the destruction that Hurricane Rita caused. Many thanks to all your thoughts, ideas, prayers and concerns. Everyone who has helped is so special to me. Working on this project has helped heal me emotionally with the toll that Rita took on me that I didn't even realize that it had. And friends like you were there to help me as well. I just wanted to let you know what was going on and I'll try to continue to keep you up with the progress. Much love, Hilda

Oh my goodness!! In my last post I forgot to mention a very important event. In September of this year, we had a photo exihibition of the work of Jay Stock at the Brimstone museum. It was of the photos that Jay took while he was down here taking pictures of the clean up in March. They were amazing. We raised 250.00. The amount raised does not indicate the success of the exihibition, but the impact that was felt on the community. It was the first photographs that the museum had on Hurricane Rita. So much has been documented about the damages of Hurricane Katrina, that the museum was so grateful to show what has happened to our local community. Not only that, forever in time is frozen thanks to Jay our struggles and our cares and how our community all came together, not to benefit one, but to benefit the good of all. I personally am forever indebted to Jay Stock, my friend. He is now a part of my family and a part of our community. I'm actually glad I didn't mention this in my first post, Jay deserves a post all to himself. If you want to see some of Jay's work go to www.jaystock.com. He's Peggy's friend as well, see we are all just one happy family here on tweleve.
