Default OMG, what am I thinking...

OK, I'll need major support from my Tweleve family here! My mardi gras krewe has asked that I represent them in the local Ms. Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Pageant. I'll compete in photogenic, evening gown and a mardi gras mask competition. I'll have to present 2 speeches on stage, one during the mardi gras mask competition and one during the evening gown competition.

It's been over 20 years since I've competed in pageants...I'm scared like you wouldn't believe. Of course I'm thrilled too, just to be asked to represent the krewe. But, I'm well aware of my age, lol...there could be women there 15 years younger than me.

I'm going to post my presentation speeches for the mask and for evening gown in just a bit and ask for your input. Any critiques would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'll post my photogenic picture, it's similar to the new avatar only black and white, let me know what you think....aggghhhhh!!!! I know, I need to breath. It's just been so long!

    Here's the photogenic picture.

    here's the mask presentation speech:
In 1872, King Rex chose the following colors to represent Mardi Gras: Purple representing justice, Green representing faith, and Gold representing power. Now in the year 2007, let these hues blend with the colors red, white and blue, freedoms proud colors that we hold dear. Please join me in giving tribute to the patriotism of our country and in celebrating the most beloved tradition in Louisiana. Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, I am contestant #??, Hilda Day

Here's the evening Gown presentation speech:
Glamour, Mystique and Beauty...all this began in the Southwest Louisiana celebration of Mardi Gras in 1882 when Momus, the King of Mardi Gras, landed his "royal yacht" at the foot of Pujo street in Lake Charles and proceeded through the city in a "chariot". Now in the year 2007, join me, Hilda Day and let us continue this unique tradition through downtown Lake Charles during the annual Krewe of Krewes Parade held on Fat Tuesday. Lasiez La Bon Temps Rouler!

Any critiques would be appreciated! Many thanks, Snowy

Caveat emptor! I know about as much about pageants as I do yellowhammer birds. In the spirit of the tweleve community, however, I'll step up and offer a critique of the first speech. The second seems fine to me.

I think in the first, you've got too much going on for the audience to focus. Instead of 'blending colors', (which muddled my mind) maybe you could just bring justice, faith, and power to the present day Louisiana. Something like, "In 2007, these values still define the people of Louisiana... Please join me in giving tribute to the most beloved tradition..." More clear perhaps?

That's a beautiful photo, Hilda. Definitely no problems there.

    Respectfully;
    Carol

Hilda, I think once you step out on stage, they are not going to hear a word you say. You look stunning! I'll just be your applause section.
    Good luck. benz

Congratulations!!!! Wow, you look like a pro even if you feel rusty. Poise and confidence will beat youth any day. Don't even worry about that.
I do agree that the red, white blue blending patriot part made me glaze over a bit. And honestly I come from a military family but sometimes I wonder if references to patriotism are being made for the popular vote. Know what I mean?
Good luck to you and if you need anything, you let me know. I can get awesome holographic glitter in gold and silver.

Thank ya'll so much for your help and encouragement!! The speeches were written for me, but I was told to change as desired. So I took ya'll advice. I'll leave the evening gown presentation speech as is and have basically changed the mask speech as Carole suggested. Here it is:

In 1872, King Rex chose the following colors to represent Mardi Gras: Purple repesenting justice, Green representing faith, and Gold representing power. In 2007, these values still define the people of Louisiana... Please join me in giving tribute to the most beloved tradition of our great state of Louisiana. Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, I am contestant #???, Hilda Day

I start the DREADED cabbage soup diet today to lose those 5 lbs that I need to. I know they won't stay off as most of it is water, but it will get me through the pageant. I'm warning my family I'll be irritable and fussy this week. I'm stopping it on Saturday so I can regain my strength. The things we do for vanity is absurb, I know.

I hope to finish my mask today, I'll take photos of it, I just need to find the thing that connects the camera to the computer to post it. The reason my photogenic picture is posted is that the photographer is a dear friend and put it on a disc and told me to do as I wished with it...so far, everyone likes it.

I used to do these things all the time for extra money...I don't remember having nerves like, this, lol...Hopefully, at pageant time, I'll just remember to fake the elegance and poise part and it'll all come back to me.
