Default Mystery 2007: What's killing the honey bees?

Have peeps heard about the massive death of honey bees so far this year? They're estimating about 1/3 of honeybees have died, and the number might go up as they wake up from spring. Pesticides have reduced a lot of other pollination methods and this could be disastrous for lots of crops.

I actually think that this may be scarier than the bird flu, and it's less well understood.

This might explain why the grapes for my chicken salad cost $14 last week.

I have heard about this. Here is a link to a great article about this issue and what is being done about it.

During our fall months I noticed an interesting and unusual behavior in our local bee population. They were frantically feasting on hummingbird feeders. Swarms were fighting to get at the nectar and I had never seen that before. At the time I thought it was a sign of a cold winter coming (which for us has been colder that usual). Perhaps this swarm was getting fuel to fly off to greater pastures. I'll be watching this for sure.
