Wow, sorry to hear about this. Staying still and healing is not what a teen is used to. Especially an active one like yours.
Here's a funny yet true story. Years ago I ran away with the circus, gypsy, rennie, carnie folks. Had a variety of jobs and one of my acts was to lay on a bed of nails and have half of a cinder block broken on my stomach. TA-DA!!! Went well for weeks, until part of the block was in the wrong spot. I tensed up (BIG MISTAKE!!!) and my spleen absorbed the blow.
My spleen had a hole in the outer casing and I was in mucho pain. Swollen, bedridden and miserable was I. Knew a midwife/ r.n. who promptly made a plaster using buckwheat flour as the base. You heard me, buckwheat flour. She packed my entire spleen area with this, waited a few hours for it to dry and started all over again. This went on for a good half a day. By the time I made it to town to see a doctor the swelling had reduced tremendously!!!!
She also had me on herbs to staunch any bleeding that was occuring. Needless to say the doctors didn't believe my story. They honestly thought I was a battered woman... If it wasn't for the picture of me on a bed of nails they never would have believed me.
My point is the the buckwheat pack reduced my swelling and allowed my spleen to get back to normal.
I've been operated on 8 times and am a full believer in western medicine and its ability to save lives in a crisis. However in my experience there is much more that we can utilize along with this life saving teaching that can (and has for me) help even more...
Good luck and hang in there!

    j15bell,

Infectious mononucleosis is almost always very benign and self-limiting. They're tired and kind of aching, but time usually works its miracle.

Keep an eye out for jaundice. Even if it progresses to that stage, that part of the disease process usually lasts about a week, then subsides.

We had an outbreak here in Louisiana a couple of seasons back, and all the kids bounced back with zero problems.

If your doctor doesn't listen to you when you tell them that your child is ill--it's been my experience that mothers KNOW the difference when their child doesn't have something run-of-the-mill--ask around for a doctor that actually pays attention to you.

    Thank you lafitte and Doc!

Had a bit of a scare. Just got back from the er. It's almost 4am.

My son had napped today. Well actually he sleeps about 16 hours lately. He got up, ate, watch TV, got on the internet, rested, etc. etc. until he was hungry again. This kid is eating me out of everything I can make or buy. He is constantly famished. Well he stands up and then immediately needs to sit. Then he stands again and I notice a lump the size of a twinkie on his left side just below his last rib. Now his entire abdomen is super tender. I call his doc and he says go to the er. Well that was about 11:30 p.m. and now we are home. Lots of tests etc., etc., etc.! He is basically ok - just the normal mono stuff. Now I am sounding complacent about mono. We will see his doc on Monday. On the way home - my son is asking me to go thru the McDonalds drive thru.

The drama around here has just got to stop.

    Thank you Holli!

I have a friend who's hubby is a lung specialist. I always go to him as soon as I am sick. I tend to pick up pneumonia very easily once I hit my 50's. So I did go to him about Richard as well. Guess he gave the doc an ear beating as well. I think the prob lies with his office staff and office manager. I told him as much and I also told him that he could get sued by someone who has nothing better to do. It's up to him to allow his office manager to make medical decisions. I did some researching as soon as my son was put on the first antibiotic. He is eating very healthy and has added yogurt to his diet for any problems with the antibiotic's. So between any help here and googling my heart out hopefully we can get him thru this as comfortable as possible. This seems like something to NOT rush thru. He is a smart boy and will catch up in school with no probs. So that's not a worry for him or me.

I am so appreciative of everyone's help on here. This kind of support is priceless. Especially when I have no family living near me. They are all miles and miles away.

    Thanks so much.

    Jean

Hey Jean, make sure the yogurt isn't the sugary kind. Try to find Brown Cow, Alta Dena, or Sunnyvale brand. Rouses stocks Brown Cow in quart containers and it is far superior to the sugary processed brands. Have him eat some in between doses of antibiotics as they will kill any good flora if eaten simultaneously.

    Thank you lafitte!

I get some from the health food store that I have locally. I just need to watch how much he eats. This boy will eat anything that isn't nailed down right now. His appetite has skyrocketed. I am also making a batch of Gumbo Z'herbs. Want to use the broth in small doses for him. Don't want him to get too much iron either. But it seems to help my family when their resistance is down. Besides it tastes sooooooo good.

    Thanks again!
