Amongst the advertising of books for children was this one"
"Turkey in the Sleigh Tonight". The short blurb says "A famtastical weaving together of two classic kids' tales with a distinctly kiwi flavour."

knocka! you just reminded me of something we would do as kids after Thanksgiving.

After the turkey was carved - all the meat cleaned off the bones - we would take the breast bone - turn it upside down - and we would then leave just the large part of the rib bone on and clean the rest off. When done you had something that looks like a sleigh. We would soak it and clean it very well and then soak it in a bleach solution. This would take one day. Then dry it for another day.

Back then we would decorate it - spray paint, sparkles - whatever. Once my brother wrapped the protruding rib bone in electrical tape. Then we would get a rectangle of styrofoam and imbed the breast bone in it.

One time we went as far as getting small plastic reindeer and some Xmas cording type decorations for reigns. Then we put cotton in the seat of the sleigh and a stuffed Santa on top.

Kids have great imaginations and this is a project that may look ugly to some but to kids they think it is just grand.

My brother and I first did this in 1956. I remember always having an extremely large turkey each year. Since I started cooking Thanksgiving at the age of 8 - I remember the turkey being at least 20lbs.

Hope I explained this clearly enough.

Yes, Jean, you have explained it clearly enough. I can picture what it might be like and think it would be a fun project for a family.

I too remember as a child being involved in making Christmas decorations. It was fun and it made us feel more involved. The decorations were not as elaborate as the sleigh you describe, but every year we would make a nativity scene. Early ones were just made in cardboard boxes using images cut out from old Christmas cards, but later ones became more elaborate as we grew older and might use twigs, say, to make a wooden stable. We used plenty of cottonwool for snow and the star would be covered with glitter.
