    Default ARRRGH. Temporary Glitches...

Computer problems. My motherboard is fried. I'm using my son's machine right now, and don't know when mine will be fixed. This came at the worst time...my 7-year-old cat Ash had to be put down yesterday. The computer and he failed at exactly the same time...on Tuesday. This was very upsetting.

Knocka--I wish I could give you a better happy birthday. I'm in a lousy frame of mind right now, despite the holidays, and I promise you I will make it up to you....with belated wishes.

Jean--we'll chat later, when these stupid things get fixed or resolved.

I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to get my FINISHED book off my old hard drive so that I can submit it to Createspace by the 31st. This is just not a great situation.

So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone--I will be taking a little break from 12 for the rest of the holidays. I am hoping to be back with you all after the 1st.

    Have a lovely holiday everyone!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It turns out that it was more than just a temporary glitch with the power supply....

MY ENTIRE COMPUTER HAS BEEN FRIED. The power supply blew up and completely destroyed the entire machine. It was an electrical failure of the worst kind--the kind you can't blame on anything except the tendency of the Universe to Support Random and Cruel Entropy.

That's everything. ALL of it. All my artwork, all my writing, all my music, all my games...everything. Both hard drives are junk. I am getting a new computer--it should be here in 5-7 days. Until then, I'm using my son's.

I'm just more than a little sick about the writing. I can reclaim quite a lot of it, from posts in the writing prompts threads here, from my flash drive, and from the backups of my novels--but there was another book that is gone--just totally gone--that I was almost finished with, and the EDITED copy of my latest novel and the one I'm going to enter in the Breakthrough novel award are both gone. Data recovery from the drives may be impossible; mostly because of the horrendous expense it would entail. There is a also a good deal of poetry that is gone, and quite a few other little things I had.

Still, with some of the things that have happend to others this year, I can't complain about my holidays. They were warm and loving, and happy, despite the extra editing work I'll have to do. I got a few wonderful little things that I already treasure, and we had some lovely music, some great food, and even Cookies!!

I hope everyone here had (or is having) a wonderful holiday season as well.

    Love and hugs to all!!!

That's horrible. Truly, terribly horrible. I'm so sorry for you to have lost your creative works, Christin, especially because you were bold enough to enter them for critique and production. I encourage you to pay whatever it takes to recover your work, simply because that, more than anything else, defines you. (easy to say from the cheap seats, though!)

Take heart, though, that the same brilliant mind that produced such wonderful things will continue to do so. I know that I will look forward to the things you choose to share in the future, and I'm fairly certain that there are a few others around here who have that same sentiment. Talent doesn't fry like computer boards do! You are and will forever be a woman with a story, and you will tell those tales whether in poems, prose, or art.

I can't wait to see what comes our way in 5-7 days.

Go eat a cookie. You deserve it.

    Christen,

I am so sorry to learn about these terrible tragedies. It is hard to fathom dealing with what you have been through this week. Your strength is evident, in that you've been able to maintain a positive attitude in the face of such unfathomable events. You are an inspiration.

I have done a bit of data recovery from crashed hard drives in the past. If you want to PM me with the technical details of what you know so far, maybe I can help recover it.

Thanks Annie and Panther....your kind words mean a lot to me.

Rusty--this isn't merely a crashed hard drive. This is a FRIED hard drive. It won't even power up or turn on. It doesn't spin at all. It's not something that can be done without taking the disks out in a clean room.

But thanks for the offer, I really appreciate it.

I am assuming you have the PC case opened and you are looking at the drive when you power up the computer. Are there any LED lights on the drive itself, on the drive controller on the bottom of the hard drive that may light up when power is applied?

If the drive controller powers up but the drive does not spin, perhaps the platters are stuck. A violent twisting of the dive around the rotational axis may free the platters.

Have you tried the drive in another computer, not the one where you fixed the power supply? Perhaps a power wire got fried.

Yes...the pc case was opened, and both drives were removed and tested with an independent tester--my son had it. It plugged into his laptop. If there had been any way to get the drives to spin or even power up, it would have shown that, and data recovery would have been possible.

The one drive is totatlly dead--makes no "hum" when power is supplied, there is no "warming" or activitiy of any kind inside the drive case itself. The other one gets warm, hums, and then clicks and clicks again, then shuts off. I will try to "twist" that one--that has a possibility of working. The other one, though, I'm afraid is just gone. I believe the one that is humming and clicking may be the slave drive I had installed--if so, that is where all my documents actually reside--which is giving me a little hope for recovering it. The dead drive is the primary one--where the operating system lies. I don't mind that the OS is gone. And there was nothing on that drive except the OS and the root files for XP, and some game files, which can be replaced. (I have the codes to redownload those.)

The one that clicks and hums has all my "creative" stuff. Several years worth.

Thanks, Rusty--for all your help. I do truly appreciate it!
