    Default Interesting Butterfly fact

As far as I can tell, Butterfly doesn't speak at all, though the others do, except for Hummingbird, who can't speak, only hum.

I don't know if there is anything relevant to this, but given the "one that is missing you did not see" and that Butterfly is missing at the end of the story when the creatures returned, I thought it could be important.

    Anyone else have any thoughts?

it is very interesting that butterfly is missing at the end. However, butterfly does talk at the bottom of page 49 but that is the only time.

I think it may well be significant; however, I don't believe it relates to "one that is missing," because Ant is also AWOL, along with Butterfly, at the end. I do find it intesting that even though they are missing from the text, both pairs - the butterflys and the ants, are in the pictures at the end. Perhaps they stopped for a beer on the way back

Not trying to debunk your theory, cabunk. Just thought I'd mention it before you invest a lot of time following that premise...

I am wondering, as others are too, whether the missing ant and butterfly were a typo, or if they were intentionally left out. That is the page where beetle was listed twice, and MS has stated that the second beetle was a typo, but he has not addressed the missing insects.

That's what I get for reading closely

    Oh well,
but in re to Sue's post, i think the ant and butterfly are delibrately missing. I posted this somewhere else, but there is a set of ellipses in the middle of the paragraph where they are listed as returning, which are only used when something has been left out (editorially speaking).

While I was researching the type of butterfly that's in the book, I stumbled across this, which I think this is pretty interesting:

"Blues are butterflies that belong to the family Lycaenidae. Most blues have some type of relationship with ants."

Before you ask, no, it didn't elaborate on their relationship in real life.

Now I don't believe that the relationship between the two is accidental in ATT. I'm not saying it's a clue - I'm saying the little details he has researched to put this story together are minute. No wonder it took him so long to write it!

For what it's worth, the butterfly does indeed talk (it talks during the attempts to get Zac's attention).

Secondly the butterfly and ant are travelling partners, and they are missing in the end. There are reasons for this omission.

Thirdly, and just for fun perhaps, notice on the last portrait page there where you see all the happy couples back together, you'll notice that one of the spiders is about to eat one of the ants. yummy.
