Default "They first modified the book..."

On p.53 the text says something VEEEERRRY interesting:

"According to legend, the Malic Hest fancied themselves alchemists. They first modified the book just to make new Rings of Eternal Life, but they weren't smart enough to read the ancient Hest language." (Italics mine)

What about the HBC appears to have been previously changed? Maybe we need to fix something about those code blocks BEFORE we can even think about reading them as they were originally intended?

Maybe they doodled on them filling stuff in and turning it bold.

I'm giving up thinking about this puzzle logically. There is no logic in it. However...

The Malic Hest "ripped the book apart for it secrets and changed the book for their vile purposes into the Book of Dark Spells." (p. 16.) But they 'never succeeded in understanding the ancient hest language'.

So how could they 'modify' something they couldn't even read? Because if they had been able to read it, they wouldn't have needed to steal the good fairies' rings--they could simply have made their own.

The only thing I can think of, is that there are pages MISSING. This would go along with the poem line: nothing seen is what you'll find, and also with the general theme of missing things being the key--the missing constellation parts, the missing stuff we talked about in another post...

Maybe the code would be readable if something were placed over it--like a page of lines, or moons, or dots or a solid black page that prevented one from looking at something dangerous, like the material they make Joo Janta Peril-Sensitive sunglasses from (the kind that turn completely black to keep you from getting upset at what you're seeing?) LOLOLOLOL...

As I said....I'm no longer thinking logically.

What do people often do when they are staring at a page of whatever, that they don't understand or are stuck on? I don't know about the rest of you but I doodle on it or beside it.

    "... a Darkling leader will emerge" (p. 52)

-Does a Light leader emerge also, going on the theme of Dark vs. Light.

Which brings me to question what race is Zac? Human, Halfling, and/or Elf? I searched and only can find reference of handsome-woodcarver

-We are given only 2 illustrations of Zac's right ear and all the other times his hair is covering his ears
    1. pg. 41 it's pointed like an Elf or Halfling (solar eclipse)
    2. pg. 72 it's looks like a human ear. (lunar eclipse)

Zac was also called Zacariah in the first book, but his full name is never used in SOTAD.
