    Perchprism,

I'm obviously still in the dark about what is truly going on with all of this, but the realization that we move between the floors along these different paths is a big help in starting to figure things out.

We enter and leave areas via clues. I'm getting the feeling we collect letters and numbers we seem to 'drop' along the way, hopefully attaining the true state, highway, and mile for an actual dig site.

We apparently enter and exit floors via several different mechanisms: doors, mirrors, windows, chutes, etc.

These entry and exit clues appear to be stationed in close proximity to their actual entry/exit.

I haven't figured out where a path ends or begins, but I'll try to demonstrate what I see happening.

Use the entry room on floor 9. Two doors there. One is marked 'It is Forever', the other one has a light on a helmet with it.

As mentioned before, I think 'It is Forever' is a description of the Mobius Loop on the blackboard. So, when we walk through that door, you would next travel to the blackboard. You would work your way through the blackboard, and that three-pronged symbol at the end would be the clue to tell us where to go next (which I don't know).

The light on the helmet is a spoonerism. LIGHT HELMET--drop the 'L' in helmet--gives you LIGHT HEMET. Sound it out as a spoonerism.

    HEIGHT LIMIT

This is a reference to that Whizz Bang clue on floor 7. You would have completed whatever puzzle is in that corner with all the colored balloons, gotten to the HEIGHT LIMIT and exited that area through that hole in the floor to arrive at the door with its LIGHT HELMET. Collect whatever we're supposed to do in that room, then exit through the other door 'It is Forever' and take us to the blackboard with the Mobius Loop.

    Does that make any sense?

I'm finding it REALLY interesting we drop or add letters along the way to get where we need to be.

To get to the FIREPLACE on the 12th floor, you had to add or drop a 'P' depending on which way we're supposed to be moving from the LIAR FACE on the third floor. The other exit from the fireplace moves you from the BELLOWS to ELBOWS by either adding or removing an 'L' depending on which way we're moving.

I hope this makes some modicum of sense. I don't think I'm hallucinating about all of this.

    Default Salon/McSweeney's article

"A Real Life Treasure Hunt Takes Off," by Richard Parks, posted on Salon.com on 4/29/10. TinyURL.com - shorten that long URL into a tiny URL

If anyone has an account on Salon, could you ask the writer or editor of this article to clarify this statement:
"Through a series of acrostics and illustrated ciphers, the book reveals the locations of the numbers as it spins a whodunit tale, the story of a mysterious clock robbery."
Find out whether he meant to write "anagrams" in this sentence, not "acrostics".

Fantastic! That makes perfect sense - thanks Doc

On this basis I think I might have found the first complete maze path too ... check this out:

    Route 1
3rd Floor Liar Face >->-> 12th Floor Fire Place
12th Floor Fire Place Bellows >->-> 11th Floor Elbows Box
11th Floor Elbows Box >->-> 1st Floor Fire Place Bellows
1st Floor Fire Place >->-> 3rd Floor Liar Face

Although I'm not sure how we would establish the precise start and end of the path as the 'Routes 2, 3 & 4' show, this path is a kind of Mobius Loop

    Route 2:
12th Floor Fire Place Bellows >->-> 11th Floor Elbows Box
11th Floor Elbows Box >->-> 1st Floor Fire Place Bellows
1st Floor Fire Place >->-> 3rd Floor Liar Face
3rd Floor Liar Face >->-> 12th Floor Fire Place

    Route 3:
11th Floor Elbows Box >->-> 1st Floor Fire Place Bellows
1st Floor Fire Place >->-> 3rd Floor Liar Face
3rd Floor Liar Face >->-> 12th Floor Fire Place
12th Floor Fire Place Bellows >->-> 11th Floor Elbows Box

    Route 4:
1st Floor Fire Place >->-> 3rd Floor Liar Face
3rd Floor Liar Face >->-> 12th Floor Fire Place
12th Floor Fire Place Bellows >->-> 11th Floor Elbows Box
11th Floor Elbows Box >->-> 1st Floor Fire Place Bellows

I'm also not sure how the letters that were added or removed along the way (PLLP) fit into this though as I can't see them pointing to anthing at the moment.

Or is it Second, Hour, and Minute?

    Starthinker,

That is really, really clever. My intuition says that's right.

Make no mistake, the game is FULL of state/highways/miles.

That's one of the problems--there are actually too many of them.

    Will continue to ponder,

    Doc

Wow this one looks like fun...sadly I am late in the game finding out about it, having just read about it in Salon yesterday. Can't wait to see the book when it arrives tomorrow! Glad to see Doc is leading the lines of exploration, as usual!

My partner and I have a state, hwy, and mile marker. It looks good. We'll be heading out there very early this morning. It is very important that we eliminate this site as THE place the number is hidden, so we'll spend a few hours at least, following a fairly long drive. We feel that at the very least, it will be demoted to landmark status.

Some update is likely to follow.

    Which floor (or state)?
I'm also planning a long drive tomorrow or Sunday, but I won't be able to start until after lunch tomorrow. It'd be disappointing to get there and find a hole.
