@emeraldhunter, awesome, thank you. I'm for BASEBALL as the theme. 262 IS a batting average.

    Default Schematic maps?

A couple or three of the floors seem to have maps that convey a vague idea of the dig site location. I first noticed this on Floor 1, where so many clues made me think that the green rug was The Mall in Washington, D.C., lined with symbols representing the various buildings of the Smithsonian museums. I thought I had to let go of The Mall map when the number was found in Virginia, but gradually wondered whether the donut location - due west of the National Mall in the illustration - wasn't a match for the dig site due west of the National Mall in the real world.

I also see a map in the arrangement of numbers on Floor 9, as I described in this post: Main Clue

This morning, I was looking at the Alchemy Machine, and wondered whether this is also a map. In this case, a schematic map of the U.S. itself. Starting at the western end, we have the "3+1" arrangement of the green and blue teacups. California is the 31st state. (Also "Victrola + Fan + In = California VNT". Don't know what the VNT could mean, so there are lots of good reason to ignore this if you like.)

The opening in the machine where the pepto bismol (pink frosting?) is coming out looks like a reverse image of the outline of Utah. Over Utah is the window that is shaped like the rectangular Wyoming. The smoke stack could represent the stack-shaped state of Idaho.

From here the map is not so clear in my mind, but the implication seems to be that the conveyor belt is moving us toward an eastern location. If AP's good insight about Smokey the U of Tennessee mascot is correct, the dog-shaped cloud probably stands for Tennessee. (Is there a reason that a nuclear silo would represent North Carolina? Oh, maybe "A hot nuclear silo = South Carolina + le"?)

If the map notion is correct, my guess would be that the machine's output is a state clue for the dig site. We have 3 + 1 again. The 13th state was Rhode Island. The new t-shirts could be a New Jersey clue, as others have pointed out.

I am starting to buy into the notion that red lights represent red herrings, so this whole schematic map may be useless because of the red light on the alchemy machine. I'll be interested if anyone sees any parts of the map that I am not yet seeing.

We have several clues to get us started. A HAT, a MAT, a MOLECULE (which is C2H4O2), an UMBRELLA STAND, DOUBLE DOORS, and some CLOTHES.

Let's start with the most interesting item: the molecule.

MOLECULE = MILE CLUE when I = O. To the astronomers out there, you'll recognize IO as being a MOON, which comes into play soon enough....
I've abridged Doc's original post, but I believe he is the only person I've seen who displayed theories about the items in the kitchen.

Any science people out there who can help to decipher the molecule in Quello's kitchen? I found a website that shows diagrams of chemical formulas, but the version on Quello's wall isn't shown.
    Molecules with molecular formula C2H4O2

If the notion of a schematic map is correct, starting with California on the left side of the Alchemy Machine, I think the kitchen area might represent Georgia. Figuring out the gasmask, twig, jar (vase?) eyeball bowl, and other stuff in the kitchen may reveal highway and mile clues.

I couldn't find any molecule that looks like that. I thought maybe it was oxyamide, and mentioned it in a previous post. I think that is probably wrong. I'm not a chemist. Ethylenediamine is a possibility, if the hydrogens attached to the carbons are not shown, which is sometimes the case in molecule diagrams. Either of these would have to be drawn sort of wrong though. The carbons are usually left out too if the hydrogens attached to them are, as the Wikipedia diagrams show. And usually nothing is left out if the diagram is a ball diagram the way this one is, only if the atoms are represented by letters.

Assuming the small atoms are H, the pink atoms could conceivably be C, connected by a triple bond, and the blue N which I guess would be acetyldiamine. That name is used for a different molecule though. They could be O and N, which I think would be peroxydiamine. The pink atoms could be N and the blue C, with the structure (CH2)=N-N=(CH2), I can't figure out what that would be called. But in any case, none of these actually exist as far as I can tell.

Basically, C makes 4 bonds, N makes 3 bonds, O makes 2 bonds, and H makes one bond. Double and triple bonds are allowed, and use up 2 or 3 of the bonds of each atom. Doc's suggestion of C2H4O2 doesn't work for the structure shown.

    Default Welcome

I think that the 4th floor and 9th floor numbers are slightly more likely to be at a Welcome Center as opposed to a plain old rest area. These two floors are the only ones where "welcome" was said to Gus and Dodge. I would be more sure of it, except that of the nine numbers found so far, one WAS at a welcome center, the 5th floor, and while the two old ladies were not actively hostile as some residents were, they did not say "welcome".

Thank you very much for following up. Maybe counting the bonds or number of atoms is the solution , not finding the actual molecule. Same approach people have been taking with the molecule on the blackboard.

    Thx again.

FYI, There is also a Welcome mat that says Welcome on Floor 2 but I don't think the TX number was found at a Welcome Center since it appears to be in the middle of the state.

    Default Krieger was not welcoming

I figured Krieger's NOT WELCOME message was much more clear than the written welcome on the mat. The 4th and 9th are the only two floors where it was spoken. But on the other hand, it is a text clue, not an illustration clue, and I think those are intended to be not as important in this book.
