    Default PA I-80 mm 1

Today I searched PA Interstate 80 mm 1 with no luck. I live only a little over an hour's drive from this rest area, so I thought it might be worth a look. This is the first rest stop in Pennsylvania, and one of the "Welcome" areas with information and pamphlets. There are a lot of trees scattered about with picnic tables.

Before leaving, we went inside, and spoke with the young man who worked there. He asked us where our destination was. When answered him, "Here." He understandably looked confused. So we told him we were searching for treasure. He then told us that in the warmer weather there were A LOT of people poking and searching around the rest area. So I am confident that there is no buried number at this particular rest stop.

Default Over the river and through security...

On my way back to my childhood home for Christmas, I took a slight detour. I could not resist, it turns out to cost just as much to fly straight from BWI to Minneapolis as to go to Atlanta, stay eight hours, and fly to Minneapolis. Of course there was the car rental and quite a bit of gas...

In the security lines at BWI, I went through the newfangled scanner. Actually, one goes through the metal detector, then they have you stand in the scanner too. For the information of those planning a trip, make sure you have every scrap of anything -- kleenex, coins, gum -- out of your pockets, or after the scanner they will give you a warning speech about what they are going to do, then feel you up. I had checked one bag, but I had my bagpipes and my laptop, with a plastic garden trowel in the laptop bag. Astonishingly, nothing occasioned any remark.

Well, anyway, my search objective was Georgia, I-20, Mile 1. Georgia was the 4th state, from the binary of the towel and two empty towel hooks, or if you prefer, the GA in "LOGANS RUN". 20 was the right half of the binary on the dome machine, and one was the script one in the corner. I did a thorough search and found nothing.

I intended to get to I-475, mile 8 as well. 475 was the switchboard with 4 rows of 7 and 6 holes, but part of it is covered, so 475 is almost 476. Kind of a stretch, but it seemed possible. Mile 8 is the wire 8 on top of the bench near Gideon. Unfortunately, I took the wrong turn off the Atlanta beltway and was halfway to Alabama on I-85 before I realized it. I thought about going as far as the I-85 Mile 0.5 rest area, but I decided to try to cut across to my original secondary objective. By the time I got to I-75, I had jogged so far north that it was not practical to continue, and I returned to the airport after sampling a pretty good pizza. Well, gorging myself on it actually. Gus would have been proud.

    Merry Christmas one and all!

    Default Jerome was not friendly

I visited my college roommate in Salt Lake City last week. Of course, I could not come so close to Idaho without checking out some rest areas. So we made a day trip. In particular, while I could not find any specific solve for it in the book, the poetical clues suggested the Jerome I-84 rest area. It is at mile 171.

It begins and ends with one, and happens to be the same number of miles from the end of I-84 in Idaho as from the beginning. Of course, there is the connection with Friendly Jerome.

It is a small rest area with only a dozen or so trees. We checked it thoroughly.

We also stopped at mile 229 (both sides) and mile 269 (both sides). The former also has few trees and could be checked completely. The latter has a couple thousand scrubby junipers and there was no way to be complete in less than a few days. The trees for the most part are also very difficult to check because of spiny obscuring foliage, irregular formation, and winter damage.

We also checked mile 363 and 369 on I-84 in Utah. These rest areas have a few dozen trees. It was getting pretty dark by the time we came by the mile 369 rest area, but I think we covered it.

    Unhappy No Dodge in Dodge...

With the finding of the magnifying glass and Dodge's prior declaration to retire to WA for fishing, I decided to check out a nearby possibility with some thematic links. There is a rest area called DODGE Junction 13 miles from the town PomeROY on highway 12. It deviates from the interstate hides, but perhaps the game had changed. It is at milepost 391 and consists only of some pit toilets, a dumpster, and a garage next to the road. Behind there is an abandoned house surrounded by many dead looking trees and a broken down fence. It looked like a great place to hide something with little chance of being found, yet it also didn't feel like the right place for the contest. We checked all the trees but saw no markers. When the state patrol pulled up I was a little worried about getting questioned, but he just had to use the restroom! We found nothing though. The kids were excited to look, but alas it is somewhere else. Starbuck is also futher up the road which seems to align with the 9th floor science fiction theme. Perhaps a fishing spot on the Snake River somewhere...

Theda's post included my recent fruitless search in VT. (I also stopped and looked at northbound VT / I-91 / mile 100, but not southbound - I really thought the 100 in the water dishes on floor 4 was too obvious a solution for the location for the twelve.) But I'll share here some of the logic that makes me think VT could be a contender:

    - There are 14 elevator buttons on the sketchbook pages shown at the top of the second page of text in TCWAF. VT was the 14th state.
    - There are 14 televisions scattered throughout the Ternky Tower. TV = VT?
    - In a recent Twintig post, Gus used the phrase, "Two paths diverge." This phrase reminds me of the Robert Frost poem that begins, "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood . . . ," strongly associated with Vermont. As an anagram, it could also be "Two paths diverge = Two-pager hides VT." This would bring us back to the two-page sketchbook image, and the fourteen elevator buttons.

I hope sharing this might help to advance the hunt. If anyone has solid ideas about highway and mile locations in VT or the northeast, feel free to send me a private message. Maybe we can work something out.

Mayorsara, excellent work on counting teles. I'm a real fan of rotating words, palindromes, tanga, and greek letter substitutions.

I'd like to see the fruitless searches list heavily edited to reflect whatever methods and floor(s) information gave each prospective site. Many different floors composed these sites. I don't think I alone can recreate all of it...several might just be part of a brute force method, or a "well why not, since were close by" search.

As far as I'm concerned there are only so many approaches worth considering: 1) 13th floor only, 2) multiple floors including rooftop and inside cover page illustration segments (art only), 3) text only, 4) art and text, 5) additional non-book clues a) tours, b) website, c) twitter. All in all, my preferred approach is in the style of the game Taboo, where all a specific list of words or catchphrases are disallowed: like not being allowed to say the word 'circle' or 'apple' when giving hints for the answer 'Pi'.

Most important right now is deciding if Dodge has detoured from SHM, jumped the track, or the ship, or the shark...or all of the above. Without his Magnifying Glass he is no longer able to look closely at things like finger print smudges, or shoe tread patterns, or fuzzy bits...anything else? Maybe that's a clue.

Default Pennsylvania - the 12-letter word

So this weekend I headed to Pittsburgh with a single location in mind:
    PA / I-70 / mm 5

This Welcome Center is in Washington county, PA.

For me the only simple/neat conclusion to this book was that Dodge had solved the crime as soon as he stepped in Floor 12, when he saw the coordinates for Arkansas. Of course he couldn't verify it, and maybe it was only a few floors below that he understood that the numbers corresponded to s/h/m, but he decided that he could play at this game too and began leaving coordinates of his own:

In floor 12 he left the clue for Pennsylvania by opening one of the tiny drawers in Quello's cabinet.
In floor 9, he noticed a few numbers upside down and memorized one of them - 70.
And then in floor 4, as "Moonriver" was played on the piano, he went to the labyrinth room and traced 5 in the sawdust. It immediately got soaked by the dripping water fountains, so he traced it again.

The above is the explanation for my theory, but unfortunately not for where the 12 was buried.

The welcome center had relatively few trees and a lot of them were pine trees. Others were surrounded by gravel. I checked all of them, thoroughly - for recent activity, for nail holes, for pentagons or anything out of the ordinary. Nothing. Of notice - a creek passed behind the Center (seemed good enough to fish), but on another side of a metal fence, and I didn't dare trespass. My behavior was weird enough, checking trees one by one.

As frustrated as I was, another idea began forming in my mind - I was really sure of the state, so I looked for a rest area named Washington - and there was one, on I-79, mm 31. It was a turn out, not a rest area, but thinking of the Arkansas site, I thought it was worth a look.

The turn out was blocked, but I left my car and walked up to the area - a few nice trees and another creek behind a barbed wire fence. The area was blocked because of some testing by a company - there were all these flags with numbers in them (!!) marking a rectangle on the grounds. It seemed legit enough, but if it was a pentagon I'd have dug up the entire area.

There was a tree with a strange marking, like 2 letters - A and Z - on top of each other, so I dug beneath it. The soil was hard and covered in grass. It didn't look like anything had been buried there in the last few months.

So I did the only thing an obsessed deducer could do - I jumped the fence and began exploring. Many interesting trees and overall a good place to dump a body, but it was an impossible task to see the tree from the forest. I always had that problem.

I was assuming that somehow the tree would be in an organized area, even if a bit hidden (like in Idaho). Trust me, only luck would have helped me find a marking in that forest.

Incidentally, there are only 2 rest areas named Washington in the entire US, according to the interstate rest areas site. The other one is in Indiana.

Sorry for the long report. I'm out of ideas now, but I think if someone sees the logic in the state, maybe they'll find other unused numbers throughout the floors that point to a location (h/m) in Pa, which is after all the only state with a 12-letter name (West Virginia, New Hampshire and Washington DC don't count for me).

I'll add these to the list of fruitless searches in a separate reply.

    Good luck to everyone!
