Just to get this in the fruitless searches list
I checked out SC, I-95, Mile 4 rest area (the welcome center) awhile back as a potential solution to Floor 8. This was just before the pentagon solution was found, and it is a huge rest area, but we did a fairly complete investigation.

Default Summary post - fruitless searches - please update this as needed

It is hard to keep track of what has been searched and what hasn't. It might be easier if we have one "master list" and each person can update that post with each new "fruitless search" as it occurs. That way, the most recent post will always be accessible and comprehensive. (I wish I knew how to use tabs to get info to line up more neatly. If anyone is better at formatting, please feel free to repost this.)

As you update this thread, feel free to cut out all this introductory verbiage. And you don't have to retain the "quote" to attribute this to me. I'm obviously standing on the shoulders of giants here who did all the driving and searching.

I thought about grouping this info by highway or general region, but decided to stick with alphabetical order by state.

I know there is other search info that hasn't made it into the "fruitless searches" thread, and remains buried (lol!) in the threads for various floors. Feel free to pull out that info and add it to this evolving post.

I have included the name of the person who posted the search info and (for most) the rough date of their post. The post date was not always close to the date of the search. Some people did not search personally, but posted on behalf of others. If you want to know how thorough their search was, whether they really looked at both sides of the rest area, how high they looked on each tree, etc., you'll have to go back in this "fruitless searches" thread to see their original post or send them a message with a direct inquiry.

I gleaned the following "fruitless search" info from this thread as of 7/19/10:

AR / I-40 / mm 235 Animal Painter early July
AR / I-40 / mm 243 Animal Painter posted (for Stercox) early July

CA / I-10 / mm 91 Maskit July 18 (search was awhile ago)

DE - can someone add the info for this? I just KNOW it has been searched and don't want to keep answering the same inquiry over and over

I want to add, I realize that it can be a little embarrassing to put up a post about a failure. The good news is, almost no one in this forum will have any idea how far you drove in search of a number - C3 coined the term "insanity radius" to describe the distance you're willing to go to check a solution. We're all just as nutty about this book (maybe even more nutty), and appreciate every effort being made to help solve the remaining puzzles. People will be really grateful if your info can save them a trip or allow them to trade theories about why it might be the right highway but just up the road a bit....

Good work MS. I see at least one on this list that should be searched again, possibly 2.

Nice job. Thank you for your consolidation project.
    Just one correction for Oregon...
I changed the interstate number in OR from I-15 to I-5.

    Keep up the good work!

I've searched so many stops I'm dizzy...I think my stochastic radius is as yet undefined...

Default Comprehensive List - Updated 7/20/10

    Default RI / I-95 / Mile 10 (11)

This is a turnout or weigh station, not a full rest area. I thought the clues were strong enough that there might have been an exception to the general pattern. But I searched both sides as best I could for a total of almost three hours on July 21 and came up with nothing. If you think you can make a more systematic search than I did, here is some background info:

The southbound side is large and very lovely but it is difficult to search: a wild woods with many, many trees and lots of rounded boulders (monoliths?). On the plus side, it was shady and cool and not buggy until about 4 p.m.

Next to the highway, there are scrubby trees on a bank and a steep drop off to the road. I didn't think the treasure would be buried on the slope but looked through the brush as best I could near the top of the bank.

On the entrance end (where you pull off the highway), I tried to search as far as the nearest culvert. I found that about 150 steps away in a busted-up condition. Round stones sat in front of the outflow area (probably a deliberate erosion-reduction arrangement).

Since there were too many trees and too confusing a landscape for a systematic search of every trunk in the turnout, I tried to do a 360-degree scan from the top of a rock every few yards. I walked up and down the length of the area several times in each direction. I didn't see any TCWAF markers. There is a cyclone fence at the rear of the rest area, so there is some sense of a limit for the searchable area.

It occurred to me that it would be really, really hard to bury anything in this rock-filled area. The trees are coming up through cracks in the boulders.

The second culvert is toward the exit end of the rest area, but off a path at the right edge of the parking lot. It looked a bit like Ida Mayfield's apartment: tires and a tv thrown into the outflow area. I saw no marker or other sign of a good dig site.

The Northbound side of the rest area is different from the southbound side: The middle of it is occupied by a big, impenetrable swamp filled with some kind of cattail-like plant. I found culverts at both ends, as expected. Another kind of pipe on this northbound side is found in the remains of a former cyclone fence. There are more than 15 pipes sunk in the ground where fenceposts used to be. Only a few sections of the fence remain on one end. I searched the trees as best I could up to this former fence line.

There are a couple paths into the wooded parts on either side of the swamp, but I didn't find one leading around the back of the swamp.

A note about both sides: Apparently "no facilities" means "feel free to go potty wherever you like" in some dialects. There was what I would have to describe as a constant stream (so to speak) of men going into the woods to take a leak. I was grateful that we had had rain recently, but it was a bit creepy to be in the woods while all this was going on. If you go, wear sturdy shoes that you might be willing to burn when you get home.

Now that I've had a couple days to recover and reflect, I am wondering whether the apparent strong evidence for R.I. was all a false trail. Arielannette has already searched the rest area at mile 6 in R.I. That and mile 10 are the only two rest areas listed on Interstates in the state. Another possibility is that there are highway rest areas that are not on Interstates, and that departing from the S/H/M solution pattern for the first nine puzzles is yet another way that the game has gotten harder.
