We've been at this for a long time...okay, maybe its just me...where has everyone gone too? Wingman, Mayorsara, cosmicjay, carbonrod, snickers??? We (I) miss seeing your ideas. I've shoveled a great deal of muck on my own and hoped my ideas would contribute in some way. It was never my wish to dominate the forums or look like a spammy troll. I hope its been a good source of entertinment to any followers or skeptics. Im sure there are some pirates lurking in the ranks. It would be great if i could see an Arrrr, matey once in awhile.

Anyways, ive finally taken the time...or given up the time rather to fine tune and make final adjustments to my theory (meanng: i phoned my poor mother to listen to me talk for two hours straight about my theories) and i feel compelled to take advantage of the Christmas holiday to go forth in hopes of catching Dodge. Im planning on picking up Mom and heading far into the mountains. It will be a challenge, especially if I need to chain up.

Who knows, maybe i'll cross paths with Doug Dooley and his Mom and do battle. LOL. Wish me luck. I only have a hope to find the 12...its never been a sure thing, but I feel compelled to end this Frodian Enigma. (Yes, Frodian...you know, the guy wth the ring).

I've been lurking but don't have much in the way of new ideas - i've got some time the next few days & maybe will poke around.
Good luck - at this point I'm mostly interested in seeing how this wraps up.

E, I hope you do wrap it up. I fizzled out on interest when figuring out what was left to find meant skipping back and forth from the book to internet. The numbers went very fast in my opinion so I sort of felt dooped about the 12. Maybe the clues in the book already took someone to where it was originally meant to be but it was yanked for the virtue of interest? I think that is how I feel, game changed mid contest to extend said game. Something like that.

In any case, there is a carrot they are still dangling and you have been keenly keeping up with the crumbs being layed down. I stand and applaud your continued efforts, insights and gumption. If anyone can track down this Dodge character, and deserves to catch him, it is you. Keep good notes, take pics and send us a good report with a big 12 ending.

On that note: I will post this elsewhere, but it is time to plan a HUGE tweleve.org 12/12/12 Hunt. I believe I'll start a thread. i have a few ideas...it will be a great year of planning. Cheers, Domino

Thanks Domino, while cleaning up my ideas I decided my main idea wasnt good enough. I've failed to see a concrete path. Breadcrumbs certainly show us the way, but I've ran my head into too many walls by not looking ahead with my own eyes. I have lots of good ideas that based in the substance provided, but my imagination has a tendency to override things a bit and there just isn't any need to enrich the stew as it is.

I must go to the area, look around, and let my senses lead me there. I'm sick of google view. I'm hungry for treasure.

Although I've scrapped my best idea, I'm still going to the area to feel things out.

Your second sentence will either heal your first two above or give you a fresh, new outlook...or both. Going to the area means adventure, and that in and of itself is refreshing. And, proverbially and axiomaticallyKEY.
Myself, I will put in 4 separate 8 hour drives for 4 separateadventures, 2 of which are treasure based along the same lines as you- to feel things out. And, who knows...maybe dig. I may even follow all of this up with a 12 hourdrive to check on one last adventure before heading back home in a few weeks.

Hunt Happily and with optimism in your soul.

Well well, I went and I searched 5 sites. There were 2 that i didn't check. I spent some time going over some of the connections I've made that I hadn't yet fit into place and only now, a day later, do I see that the final details fit with one of the two remaining location options on my list.

I'm in no hurry to go on another trip, but I will if nothing happens in a few months.

Hi erexere. I'm sorry your recent expedition didn't lead to the twelve. You have a unique approach to building on the evidence, and it doesn't always lend itself to collaboration but I know it feels right to you. Even though I have stopped posting here, I wish you good luck, high energy and abundant optimism as all Junior Deducers pursue our own flights of fancy.

I don't read this forum as often as some others, so I'm only now seeing a shout-out to my name above. Have I given up? Well, to be honest, yes. But it's not just because I took my eleven and ran. I also feel duped by Dooley. I dislike any hunt which changes the rules for the endgame. If the twelve is not buried at an interstate rest area, it opens up too many possibilities. If the clues are not given in the same way as the other eleven puzzles, it feels unfair. I'm not saying the biggest prize shouldn't be the hardest to find, I just feel like we've been led to a "bait and switch" deal. And without being able to rely on the patterns that confirmed the prior solutions, this final puzzle will have no guidelines. It's no longer any fun. The fact that people are finding their own ways to interpret the clues -- to even pick and choose what they think are the clues -- tells me there will be no way to know whether we're doing anything correctly along the way. Only after the prize has been found will we be able to look back and say whether or not this meta puzzle is well-constructed, and I've been down that road too many times before.

We all have to face being stumped in our own way. I understand catherwood's position on the matter of the hunt being an essentially sideways bait and switch maneuver, but then I wonder how else they would construct such a hunt if it is going to transgress what itself has established in SHM. From the book perspective we witness a open shut case of whodunnit followed by the challenge to find the jeweled numbers before Dodge. All the numbers have been reported "Found". The "story" has continued beyond the pages of the book with the "addenda" being the updates of numbers found at various rest areas. Are we to use this new information in some way to enhance our strategy to find Dodge? This singular premise might seem like just another "pick and choose" interpretation, but I don't think so from a construction point of view. Each number was reported on by Gus in his blog and occasionally mentioned in his twitter updates. Some quotes and pictures from the actual finders were included where applicable, but they were editorialized by Gus in some fashion and again I consider my premise, "is this presentation meant to convey new information meant to help us find Dodge?". Of course we won't know until the No.12 is found to see if this is indeed a respectably or poorly constructed meta-puzzle. I think we're meant to take that leap of faith and pursue Dodge with the sort of passion that he deems worthy of whomever "urns" the No.12 by finding his hiding place.

I've looked at this hunt a lot of ways and I'm now resolute in seeing Dodge's motives as purely intellectual and there is no bait and switch, this is merely an upgrade to what would otherwise be a routine treasure hunt in the form of youth detective fiction. McSweeneys has worked in some twists to this hunt to engage the youths of today. Gus' identity being maintained in by a blog and twitter feed is evidence to support this hunt is determined to be an internet context rather than book only.

Several things about the found numbers may be intentional clues. Is it merely random which floors lead to each number? Is the annonymous finder of the No.9 really Dodge? Do the designs of the numbers tell us something useful? Is the 9, depicting a sign board, something Dodge wanted for us to give special consideration? The initial buried location for the No.12 was the "Stone" rest area in Idaho. Is there something special about "Stone"? What of the blurbs from Gus on each number's discovery?

It is the fact that the website pushed so much to get those numbers
found (remember the post of 'pick a state that it could be in') and then to
further push to lead someone back to Idaho (three times?) until the last
piece of the book came to pass as the dropped magnifying glass,
and now his infrequent posts are redundant and self servincing at best.

We as consumers do not expect fairness or ease in the challenge, but we do demand
consistence in due course. Thats where the line has been crossed here.
