Here is something that could be a hint--maybe--in the date on the cover. Domino says cryptically at the beginning of this thread, something like this, "If looks could kill, there might be something there, but alas, this story happens much later."

It says January 9, 1899. We know it came out in 2010, so I think we should notice the difference, which is 111. In my opinion, the cowboy is looking up at the date. Eyes...We often write the letter "I" as just a stick " l ", like we often write the number 1 as a stick " l ". Also I notice that he placed two Red Rock letter I's directly across from the 1899--(I guess that could be just a coincidence, but maybe not). And also notice, January = 1, and 9 = I. The only thing that bothers me about this is that the cowboy has two eyes, not three, and we need three to correct the date to 2010!

This could tie in with the bold slit " l "s that Genetic Blend pointed out in the horse maze on page 18 (where the letter I is significantly absent in the maze). And the poem on page 30 seems to say the " l " s are important somehow.

The first thoughts that come to mind when I see the date 1899 is Frank Norris. I had to read The Octopus back in college, that was from 1901, and serves as a colorful reference piece to how rail really shook things up in the west. Anyways, I thought it was worht mentioning that the date might be a fictional reference within a novel of some sort.

Anyone ever figure out what the cipher on the front cover says?

Interesting how the cover, the table of contents and the 10 digit pseudo phone number in Greenhorn all share the same font...

    Coincedence perhaps?

There are 66 symbols on the front cover comprised of only 10 unique letter/numbers

The table of Contents contains 17 chapters with an associated symbol, of which 13 are unique and shares 6 common symbols with the front cover.

The italicized letters in the Contents page total 17 as well, of which 10 are unique, 4 are common with both cover and contents symbols

In Greenhorn, the pseudo phone number contains 14 symbols, 9 unique.

Not sure if there is a connection here in terms of using one to solve the other or what, just an observation at this point...

And by the way, Ex... way off topic... but I went through a Frank Norris phase awhile back... I pored over his entire output of work... short stories through all his novels. Took me a while to get into him, but I discovered that I really dug his style. My novel, The Missionary and the Brute though set in the Africa that I know gets its titular inspiration from Vandover and the Brute - and partial concept from McTeague/Greed... with a main character named after a character from The Pit...lol... I really got into the connections... Some brilliant stuff in there... Not relevant here - good lord I hope not, I'd be so chastened... but still good stuff....

Stvwz... that's good stuff. I have a hard enough time keeping one puzzle going without trying to match up stuff in one section with that of another... but I find that really interesting... great concept!

Historical fiction is tough reading for me. I like to think about the mysteries of the universe, but when it comes to good ol' fashioned man vs. greed I get easily overwhelmed.

Yeah, I'm not seeing any use in comparing the work to here. The 1899 date seems like our first red herring.

One of the things I was looking for in the numbers early on was the old calcuator gag... 710.77345 (Shell Oil when held upside down...) It didn't work for me either, but it was fun...

stvwz, I like the idea of counting the unique characters and comparing the other cases where the font appears.

I thought the #9 on the cover might pertain to the number of actual clues.

Reading back through these posts, I am still unclear if the cover is important to this hunt or not. We have what appears to be a Red Rock cipher, a date and a cryptic notation about USW...'66. However, the E-book version doesnt even include the front cover OR the back page with the fake bar code so what gives?
