    Default Cover

If looks could kill and dates matched up with the story, there might be something there. But alas, I think the story happens much later than the cover date.

This was the first clue I pondered. I googled January 9, 1899 without finding too much. And those killer looks are staring at "-USW UC LT. W '66".

'66 could be a year, or could be Route 66. Lt. could be lieutenant. USW could be United Steelworkers. Or US West. UC could be University of California. Several UC campuses lie along Route 66. A Lieutenant Whipple is credited with mapping out the first road that would become part of Route 66.

I'm glad we have some discussion going on this again. I've been trying to decipher the symbols. I can't find them as a specific font, as others in the book. I've been trying to use simple substitution but I have two problems. There are four different double letter combinations, which is limiting my choices. Also, I'm not sure of the order of "letters" Are the symbols read as rows across and rows down, or are they ordered in a circle either clockwise or counter clockwise? Some of these symbols also appear on the Table of Contents page. Has anyone had any progress on this?

I spent last night on the same thing... I tried to hook up some of the common digraphs... and looked at the one repeated three letter sequence repeatedly to no avail (if we read clockwise...which I'm not convinced is correct... letter frequency is only helpful if it works... which it hasn't for me yet... sigh...

    ProfessorTarr-
I believe that the cover symbols represent letters which are another layer of code (unsolved yet for me) and not a plaintext, as there are only 10 unique symbols.

Thanks! I found some that look to be of the same family... but not quite perfect... I'll keep searching. Being that there are 10 characters... that leads me to think of other things that have ten elements. Could it be a key to those? (I was never any good at grid ciphers...)
