I did not include the F in my list because it was at the beginning of a new sentence, so I have the other 18 letters. Starting to use decoders: Atbash, Affine, and Caesar don't work so far...I'll keep trying. Perhaps "fortune" is a key to use when decoding since it is italicized in the text. Also, did you notice the single "n" between past-present? Is it in italics, too?

I had always had a count of 17 capital letters, as follows:
    GZEONEBKOADWMAAYJ
which does not include the F or the I. I think the key is "unnecessary capital letters".
17 is common in several other places:
    - There are 17 chapters (or sections)
    - There are 17 italicized letters in the Contents (GASTHTENARNINMERG)
    - There are 17 bold letters on pages 17, 27, 29 (MAYAMATACGAPEHNNR)
    - There are 17 letters stand-alone on page 18 (DSSBFCVVAWWEGBASS )
    - There are other places I believe that play on the 17 theme...

I get 18 letters (GZEONEBKOKADWMAAYJ). Karma is still in the same sentence even though there is an elipses in front of it.

I don't like to be the one who posts erroneous information, and I did. I apologize. If you count Karma, there are 19 unnecessary capital letters including an I that Beth pointed out.
    GZEONEBKOKIADWMAAYJ
I just kept thinking that 17 was it as there are other groups of 17 throughout the book.

Thanks, I too, missed the I. I thought I would list the words and line up the capital letters and see if anything jumps out...

I counted the R and the closest I came to anything was "I am a Zane Grey book", but then I had DWJK left, darn!

Just for the record, in case we are to use all of the capital letters on page 5, here they are:

I do think the numbers are intriguing how we have repeated sequences - and yes, 17 does seem to be telling - except that I had a solve for the DSS one... unless that is only a layer.

I try to think of the bolds and italics in terms of sizzles or other steganography, but not really coming up with too much there....

Okay... just moving here for a change of pace... If we look at those unnecessary capitol letters - there probably aren't enough words that contain them to make this a steganography Baconian thing even using B=words with unnecessary capitols... In fact, even if we use All the Caps words, it doesn't really give us enough. So we are left with anagramming them straight up. Deciphering them using some key. Deciphering them and THEN anagramming then (which would necessitate an absolutely clear key and process). Using them as spacers counting words or letters betwixt. Using them as the way to align certain other words... (so that OTHER aligned words could be found...) Or what?
