Chapter 9: Captain Kidd
I just figured the numbers out; but boy am I still a little lost as to how to translate the result into anything actionable. Based on the conversation in the general thread, it sounds like there are quite a few others in the same boat. Maybe translating some of the user posts might help (or perhaps not!)
Anyone actually crack this part yet?
Cheers,
Steve
I really don't want to go and solve user's codes when my head is about to explode with the ones in the book. If you are hinting that the numbers give a series of letters which then in turn have to be decoded, I've found ways to make hundreds of these possibilities but how do you know which is the correct one? Any hints to decoding the numbers themselves, rather then what comes after. Maybe if I can catch up, I can help with the next step.

You really are not going to be pleased with process. It's a bit convoluted (more so than is necessary, imo).
im just curious. i havent solved chapter 9 nor figured out what the numbers mean.
how can you be so sure you know what the numbers mean if you still need to translate it again?
Well I'm still stuck!!
I think I may have got the first bit of the password and I;m thinking the numbers will give me the second bit of the password. Anyone else at this stage?
My first thoughts were the numbers have to be used with poem but havent 'seen' anything yet.
This is certainly a very confusing topic for everyone. I'll sum up as best I can:
1) When you figure out how the numbers are used, there is 100% certainty that you've done it correctly.
2) A small hint for decoding the numbers - you should have a good guess at what the next text is going to be, and you're right. Use that to figure out the technique.
2) In earlier poems, when you decode the poem there is usually some sort of extra text embedded somewhere that acts as that chapter's password. In this case, there is extra text, but it is not the password. It does not seem to be text that in and of itself needs to be decoded, but perhaps vague instructions for what you are supposed to do next. That's the part that is confusing everyone I think.
Hope this helps, at least to reduce some of the confusion.
Steve
thanks bass that makes things a bit clearer
Ace,
Keep at it.... even though some of us have decoded the numbers doesn't mean we didn't spend A LOT of time trying out various ideas for those numbers. With the expection of Molnar of course - he translated the numbers all in his head while posting a message ! lol
You have the advantage that you are working on a single path with the clue above. I can't count the number of other ideas I tried using those numbers.
just so you know it is possible to ascertain the password without decoding the numbers.
i still dont know what the numbers mean so i cant decode them but have gotten the password and opened the map for chapter 9
Just to make sure one thing is clear, I have not yet determined the password, so my earlier post regarding decoding the numbers (with 100% certainty) is referring to an initial decoding of the numbers. There may be further analysis involved on the numbers that I have not found yet.
Well I did it too myself once again. I start a solve and give up before I see it through fully and it was actually the right one. This was one of the first things I had tried too. Am now decoding the numbers. Thanks to everyone who gave me the encouragement.

There are multiple ways to solve the numbers. The comment I made earlier in the thread was regarding the method you would need if you were presented the numbers without context. There is a simpler method if you make some assumptions. But that's no fun, now, is it? :p
Well that was fun... both ways.

I'm curious - for those who figured out the final password that unlocks question 1, was there anyone who didn't guess the password, but was able to crack the number system/cipherand then figure out the password from there?
It seems like everyone who posted that they figured out the password actually guessed it and then backtracked to work out the code.
Thx,
Steve
If you guessed the 2nd half of that password - kudos to you !!!
I too deciphered the numbers, then spent alot of time working on figuring out the password from there.
OK, so I've finally knocked this one out, and it's one of those "kicking myself" situations, for reasons I won't get into that have to do with why I had so much trouble getting the first line of the password. Now I can on move on to being frustrated by something else...
:-)

Hi guys,
That one is really tricky, almost everyone has solved everything but the password still remains unsolved.
Could we get some clues in order to just understand what we are expecting to do at this point?
Thanks for all.
I was talking about the password to find. Obviuosly for the first time we don't discover it directly hidden in the poem. We have to do something else.
Some i guess the second part of the password is tricky and i still don't get what they want. Could i and we have some clues?
Thanks i didn't see this response...so i will continue to try because it is already a long time i am on they way
Just filling in questions I skipped. When was Will Smith's family involved with Pirates? Was this the rap version? Lol! Some mistakes are just inexcusible.

Do I understand that the numbers have to be decoded by brute force on that nasty little next section containing the table?
I'm back to this question Lauren and I think I'm as far as you....from what I have read here and what I think, that's the way to go....will take a better look at it later.
Hi guys,
I've received my book not that long ago (i'm from France) , and done pretty well I guess so far, sometimes with the help of this forum to hint me in the good direction, so I finally decide to create an account and start by thanking you all ! :)
So far I'm 4 questions away from the 240, and these numbers to find the second half of the password are bugging me so much.
Well I've decoded them, and find the extra embedded letters but then ... well that's all.
So here is a question for those came so far as well, and even further ;) :

Thanks again for your help and good luck to everyone.

Thanks a lot for your answer Caffeine, at least i know i'm on the good way, i've tried exactly what you said but i guess i don't see some things cause english is not that natural to me , anyway i'll continue trying, and hope that i will end with something :)
I've just seen one that seems interesting T ... E ( ... is not 3 letters but just the right amount :p)
Tom.
Hello, people!
I'm really stuck with the numbers on chapter 9.
I've decoded the text portion and (I hope) I got the first part of the chapter password. I think the numbers have the information for the second part of the password.
I know here there is some hints for AFTER you decode the numbers, but I've been fighting for a while with these numbers and I haven't could decode them. (They are taking some years of my life :-( )
I need to know if I’m in the right way.
Could you confirm if the cipher used to encode the numbers is the same kind of cipher used in C7Q15 ?
Thanks,
Oromis
