    Default Follow the Fox

I've been trying to catalog where we are on the island as the story progresses. This is what I have so far:
    • Pages 4-5: Sieur de Monts Spring, near gazebo
    • Pages 6-9: One of the bays or Atlantic Ocean
    • Pages 10-13: Otter Cove area, north up creek, along Cadillac Mountain ridge to Sieur de Monts Spring?
    • Pages 14-15: Causeway Rte 3, Bar Harbor Rd, NW corner of island
    • Pages 16-17: Some mansion??
    • Pages 18-19: head south along carriage road to Brown Mountain Gatehouse (could be Jordan Pond Gatehouse)
    • Pages 20-23: head south to Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse
    • Pages 24-27: dell just south of Jordan Pond
    • Pages 28-31: somewhere along the eastern shoreline
    • Pages 32-33: head west to Cobblestone Bridge
    • Pages 34-37: by Deer Brook Bridge
    • Pages 38-41: Jordan Pond House
    • Pages 42-45: Cadillac Mountain summit
    • Pages 46-55: One of the bays?

    Discussion encouraged.

I was trying to be brief and this may have made it ambiguous; the overall displacement is south(west). Obviously, to travel by land, you would have to go NW before you go SW.

I just don't see the Fox traveling that far. He made it to the south shore late afternoon.

You may be right. But the lighthouse in the drawing on page 23 is Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, I don't think there can be any denying that. The only other choice would be Bear Island Lighthouse, but the buildings and land topology don't match.

It could also be that the drawings and story are only loosely related. If nothing else, this exercise acquaints me with an island I'll probably never visit.

    Default RE: Lat/Long Values

Just putting this here for future reference --

Assuming that the "key" is located on public lands, and should any of the clues point to lat/long coordinates, here are some limits which could bear on the search.

From USGS Charts, it appears that we are looking at an area bounded by the value 44:25'00" N on the North, and 44:13'15" N on the South. The other boundary values are 068:10'30" W on the East, and 068:24'15" W on the West.

Ultimately, this may be of no use to anyone, but I stuck it here on the off-chance that it might be needed ... besides, it's another way to add to my posting count (hee hee hee).

I previously posted this elsewhere, but this seems to be the right thread for it:
    Fandango's Movements Summary

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary of Fandango's movements. (Correct me if I'm wrong, OK?)
    1. Otter gets the key from Neptune
    2. Otter swims down a cove to a creek that goes to the sea.
    3. Otters follows a rock seam into a grove.
    4. Fandango gets the key. Hides it in his fur.
    5. Fandango dart to the causeway that connects the island.
    6. He stops at the end of a marshy cove.
    7. He runs through familiar forest past ponds and coves.
    8. He comes to private estate (Mr. Proud Old Fop)
    9. Heads south along a carriage road.
    10. Ends up somewhere like a tourist attraction..campground? Point of interest?
    11. Reachs the south shore/ocean
    12. Finds a pier. Lobster man tells him to go east.
    13. He is in woods then finds a soft ferny dell where he sleeps.
    14. Reaches the eastern shore.
    15. Goes to a cabin (scratches on Hermit's Door)
    16. Meets Harley Quinn
    17. Goes west.
    18. Finds Chief Abnaki
    19. Has vision of fire.
    20. Reaches western shore.
    21. Finds fields of flowers, yellow pine and spruce.
    22. Scratches at a door and meets Old Woman and sits at sunny table.
    23. Old Woman tells him to climb "our steepest mountain".
    24. He goes up a steep mountain road.
    25. Panhandle Sam offers him a ride and he accepts.
    26. Sam points to island specked horizon (sun is setting)
    27. Reaches summit of Mt. Cadillac
    28. Eagle grabs him and flys west because they can see sun setting.
    29. Eagle drop him in the bay.
    30. Fandango surfaces and he realizes he no longer has the key.

Maybe time and the milepost is how we figure out Fandango's route. If this is an accurate approach, I think we can assume that the illustrations are in chronological order. We just have to solve for variables to pin down the unknown locations.

In some cases we know the location, and we can find the distance to the mountaintop by finding the sign. For instance, he is with the fairies at Jordan Pond, and we know that is 4 miles from Cadillac (by the logic of the milepost). We haven't yet pinned down what time he was there, but we know it was over the first night and into the early morning of the second day of his mission. Using that information may help us to pin down the locations of the fisherman and of Harley Quinn, who he visits before and after the fairies.

Here's a word problem that uses the 40 mph clue from p 45:
The clock at Mother Time's house says 9:05 when the fox leaves. Panhandle Sam's watch says 9:30 when the car carrying the fox reaches the mountaintop. The speed limit is 40 mph. How far did the fox travel in 25 minutes if he traveled at the speed limit the whole time? (A difficult assumption to make in the real world, I realize, especially considering he was on foot for part of the trip.)

25 minutes is 2/5 of an hour.
    2/5 of 40 miles is 16 miles.

The only location (we know of) that is 16 miles from the mountaintop is Norumbega Mountain. It doesn't look as if Mother Time lives on a mountain, though. Maybe this approach won't work.

On the other hand, maybe images in the illustrations are red herrings, intended to throw us off in an attempt to map Fandango's route. Maybe we are supposed to rely on things said in the text and on the milepost, not on the images such as the spring house, Jordan Pond, the gate or light house. What would that leave? The border phrases (e.g., "Across a Marsh") and the text. Why would the milepost be valid but the other images would not be trustworthy? Hmm.

Before "Tea for Two," Fandango is at the fire location with a time of 6 p.m. showing on the mantel clock.

From the fire to Mother Time's cottage takes from 6 p.m. to 9:05 = 3 and 1/12. 40 x (3 and 1/12) = 123 and 1/3. Hmm. Maybe we have to assume that Fandango arrived before 9 p.m. (he does say the lady talked for a long time), and the clock is showing his departure time. I don't see any clear indication of just how long she talked, so it must be encoded, if that's information we need to have.

It occurs to me that the locations in the illustrations all have to be on Mount Desert Island. That eliminates 13 signs right off the bat. And even in a fictional world, it's hard to believe that the fox could travel 40 mph if he's not in a vehicle. So I see this theory crumbling before my eyes. Unless there's another way to calculate distance and time using the information in the book. Just thinking out loud, I guess.

    mainer 1,

I had initially considered this location as well, but it does not match the text on page 38: "When I reached the western shore...I soon sniffed out a dwelling..." Thuya gardens are not on the western shore of MDI, so I looked elsewhere.

Although I haven't really found much to support this idea, I felt that the old lady lived in Pretty Marsh, which is surrounded by fields of flowers and bordered with yellow pines.

I really liked the carved wooden gates at Thuya Garden, thinking maybe the authors used the carved images to create their riddle. But I gave up on the idea when it didn't match the text.
