Welcome SP! (And Cat, you continue to be the greatest!)
I don't see a firefly on page 57, but who's to say for sure? We've all looked at every image so closely so many times, we're probably seeing for "trees" than "forest" at this time. (Just the opposite of what it's been suggested we do, for sure!)
There are at least two categories of theories of what the hidden forest creatures mean. One is that they are placed solely as the second way (from page 12) of how to "solve" the puzzle -- gathering enjoyment by searching for them with a child. The other is that they provide clues to help find the real jewels. Since none of the real jewels have been claimed, I don't know that anyone but the author really knows for sure at this point.
To your other point, this is my first treasure hunt, as well. From what I gather, a number of people on the board have done this before, and as you continue to particpate in the hunt, you'll get a better idea of the personalities -- many great, very few not so great. I, myself, have chosen to ignore a certain crackpot. I believe that's the best reaction to attention hounds.
But more importantly, just as in real life, none of us have a monopoly on what's right or wrong. We're all just doing our best, and trying to derive as much enjoyment as possible from the journey. Hope you're successful in that regard.
Best of luck!
Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance.
