I have been plugging away at this puzzle for a week now. I thought I had a breakthrough just now, but found no city exists with the name I found. I arbitrarily assigned numbers 1-5 to the 5 kinds of acorns and went through the process tons of times and ways. One of those times got me leaping out of my seat... I got:

    N A P A Z I H W N H

Which I took as Whizapan, NH which does not exist.

In my million times of plugging in numbers, I obviously tried to solve backwards using 'SP' but got nowhere. Then I tried 'NAT P' and actually found a way it can work - but the rest comes up jibberish.

I should give up the fight but I know I will be back pouring over the book again in no time.

    keep hunting deboriole

(12pm notes to self that he should probably be staggering around chat and not on a thread unless he wants to wind up in virtual purgatory like Monsieur le Shackleford)

Ok I'm going to post what I have in hopes of someone finially telling me the answer ot correcting my mistakes.

The acorns at first were though to be divided into:

    Pair
    Dark Glint
    Light Glint
    No Glint
    bottom view

Since that time I figured out that these didn't 1)give me a 5x5 coordinate to work with and 2) explain the multitude of sizes.

I then worked out that the sizes of the acron was all that mattered. There are 5 distinct sizes starting with the top left corner beign the only small acorns.

But where is the key? I then tried them from smallest to largest but nothing was there.

I tried largest to smallest and got nothing

I've tried the shapes of the Firefly and sort of got soemthing but nothing positive.

SO if it's known what's the answer so I can fill it in my book?

    Thanks
    the wookie!

That's too funny. I was thinking the exact thing! Okay, I was just kidding.

Default chwbcc, i see only 3 sizes

appears to only have small, medium, large (?).

Why could you not get a grid going with your 5 classifications? pairing them up by proximity (as per snail) always gives two coordinates - in this case the 20 types would reduce to 10 letters. Normally i'd be wary of only 10 letters, but the PATTONS RUN solution for the buttefly (combined with Near the Overlook) seems legit, so perhaps 10 is enough.

I was thinking of using their direction (based on a clock, so essentially 2, 4, 8, 10) but there is no acorn pointing directly down or up (the pairs would need to be 'averaged' to find their position). But maybe only 4 are needed for this one - the bottom row of the grid contains infrequently used letters (V,W,X,Y,Z) so perhaps it's not used.

The acorn pointing towards us is definitely an oddity. It's certainly of Large size, but doesnt point in a time direction.

I was using large acorn, tiny acorn, acorn pair, dark glint, and light glint as my 5. I left the tiny pair in the upper left corner as 2 tinys rather than calling them a pair because it came out as an odd number (21) if I grouped them together. I tried starting from the firefly and also starting from each of the ends of the twig at the bottom.

I feel there should be some indication of how to group them like in the snail puzzle. Maybe I just wish there was something obvious!

I also cracked this one earlier today, but I live in California and there was no way to get out to the part of the country it's in--Oklahoma. I'm having a friend go tomorrow morning (she wanted to wait) but I guess it's probably gone. The solution was simple and came to me in a flash--after 3 days of analysis. I was always on the right track though. This really breaks my heart. If I didn't live all the way out here...I'd probably have the token.

    Default why 21?

i count 20 when considering the pair in the upper left to be a pair. Why not start at the peculiar acorn pointing towards us? (and then counter-clockwise since the tiny one is very close by).

I dont know the solution yet to the bee, but i'll bet the starting point was the thistle with the shadow.

    Default definitely solved?

were her 'types' correct? I had thought perhaps the light marked acorns were actually two types - left and right. One has the mark on the right.

good luck! firefly seemed tricker due to no fairy pointing (that i could see). how did you get around that?
