Default Golden Apple PO Box - New Owner - Not related to hunt

I have horrible news. Some one has emailed me back from the letter I sent, saying that they have had the PO box for two years. They are not officials of this hunt, so there fore, we have no way of checking if our solutions are correct. There fore, we cannot find the golden apple now. It is too late, and so its no use trying to solve it.

Awww! That stinks. Guess that would be why no one has 'solved' it yet. No one can even send in their solution!

We cannot conclude that this hunt is unwinnable. From my point of view, this is simply an added challenge that will take some serious armchair treasure-hunting to overcome. It really hinges on finding out who Cam Kaskgn is (was).

I sent a note to Fantasy Press's former address last Monday, and it was returned to sender. Not a solution, mind you, but simply a note with $1 in response to the notice on p. 31. I don't know why yours was answered and mine went undelivered. Odd. At least I got my dollar back.

Some ideas that may prove fruitful in the future:

    1. The address (P.O. Box 1196 Grand Rapids) is listed as belonging to Pamela Lee in a 1998 forum message here.

    2. If Fantasy Press was a registered business in 1982, surely a record is on file and publicly available somewhere.

The next avenues of attack should be to locate the illustrator (there are many Karen Wagners, at least one of whom is an artist in Michigan), and the jeweler. Time to play detective, people.

On the author's identity, 'Kaskgn' must be a pseudonym, I think we agree (no one in the world has that name, if Google is to be trusted). There must be some significance to this particular choice, the most obvious being that it is a cryptogram of something more recognizable. The only non-plural English word consistent with the pattern of letters in KASKGN is ALWAYS, but it's probably a proper name rather than an English word. Can we think of a proper name that has the same letter pattern as KASKGN or CAM KASKGN?

If you are still trying to contact those involved in the creation of the hunt...here is an old email I had kept if someone wants to pursue it. If I remember correctly, I spoke with him many years ago but he wasnt of much help.

    Dear Sir,

I am trying to get in touch with a gentleman who was employed by Preusser Jewelers in the early 1980's. I'm not sure if he is currently employed with the company. His name is Jeffery Juhas. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

There's actually quite a few more than 'always', using the criteria that only letter #1 and #4 match - and this is using a rather small dictionary (I find 5 times as many using a more comprehensive dictionary):

ablaze aboard abrade aflame afraid aghast altars always
apiary arcade arcane aslant avians aviary barbed bauble
bedbug bimbos bombed bomber bribed bribes bulbed bumble
burble busboy cancel cancer catchy checks chicer chicks
chicle chocks chucks circle circus clacks clicks cloche
clocks clucks conchs concur cracks cricks crocks crocus
dander dandle dawdle deadly diadem diodes drudge dyadic
eaters eatery eczema egrets eiders elders eldest embeds
embers endear enmesh enters eureka excels except expect
expels expend expert extend fitful gadget ganged gangly
gargle ginger gorged gorges gouged gouger gouges gurgle
hashed higher highly hither hushed hyphen ickier idling
ignite impish incise incite indict indigo infirm inkier
inside invite iodine iodize ionize irking khakis kicked
kicker kinked kirked ladles madmen maimed marmot merman
nuance oblong octopi odious oriole ormolu otiose oxbows
oxford pamper pauper pigpen pimped pimple pimply potpie
prepay propel pulped pulpit pumped purple ramrod rearms
redraw retrod roared rubric season sensor siesta slushy
soused subset sunset tarted tartly tasted taster tauted
tauter tautly tenths tilted tinted tiptoe tortes touted
trites troths truths tufted turtle twitch unduly unfurl
unhurt unjust unruly unsure upturn valved valves vulvae
    vulvas wigwam
    6 letter words: 186

However, including Cam will certainly wittle this list down - but do the resulting 9 characters produce 1 9 letter work, or 2 3/6 letter words, or ??? I think I'll look a bit further into this, but not a whole lot further...

Now as for any that are simple letter shifts, I see nothing but gibberish, but include it below:

kaskgn lbtlho mcumip ndvnjq oewokr pfxpls qgyqmt rhzrnu
siasov tjbtpw ukcuqx vldvry wmewsz xnfxta yogyub zphzvc
aqiawd brjbxe cskcyf dtldzg eumeah fvnfbi gwogcj hxphdk
    iyqiel jzrjfm

pzhptm oygosl nxfnrk mwemqj lvdlpi kuckoh jtbjng isaimf
hrzhle gqygkd fpxfjc eoweib dnvdha cmucgz bltbfy aksaex
zjrzdw yiqycv xhpxbu wgowat vfnvzs uemuyr tdltxq sckswp
    rbjrvo qaiqun

    Interesting anagrams results follow:
    gank smack
    knag smack
    mags knack
    mag knacks
    kg sackman

I obtained a fairly extensive surname list (along with male/female first names), and found 90 matches for KASKGN. Throwing in first names, over 1000 combinations were puked out.

Most read pretty poorly, as follows:
    yun hughes
    lui hughes
    kuo hughes

However, quite a few look pretty legitimate:
    jim tipton
    jim tilton
    kim tilton
    guy durden
    pat darden
    sam darden
    jay samson
    ray samson
    bud hughey
    don rourke
    jon rourke
    lon rourke
    tod rourke
    joe morman
    guy ludlow
    jim eilers

Needle in haystack I presume... I did get a laugh when I found this one, however:

    Thumbs up

Well, I certainly stand corrected. Like, hundreds of times
