    Default 11:52 - March/May?

I'm not sure sure about this time being exact. Looking at the clock, it is apparent the large hand is closer to the 12 than the 9, yet the 10 crosshatch mark is skewed. To me, just looking at the position between 10 and 11, the 'tip of the hand' appears almost exactly halfway (so 11:52:30).

At any rate, I've noticed on other images that the photocopying has missed portions of the page borders. In particular, can anyone verify if that picture frame next to '"A" IS FOR APPLE' says more than what can be seen (calendar? 'Ma.. 1/7/?')?

FWIW, I constructed a more accurate page overlay map containing the "PLACE IN ORDER" letters, and something slightly interesting is that the "ORDER" letters each overlay a tree position in the orchard on page 5 (first poem/picture image - 3 rows of 6/6/8 trees). I also tried overlaying them for each half of the map, and "R" is over Olympia, Washington, "N" is over Pierre, South Dakota, and "I" was over Nashville, Tennessee (all others were way off map). Doubtful this means anything, but I suspect the positions of those letters mean something, akin to this sort of overlay... Tried putting both map half pages together, rotating and overlaying, but no success...

Also, couldn't the Omphalos simply translate as "round (stone) artifact" e.g. the golden apple?

Finally, no one's really mentioned it, but the Karen Wagner (wagon-neer?) appears to sign all her pics as KLW. Does this middle name match the supposed artist?

This is an interesting puzzle to me - clearly the clue solutions fit into further clues generating some large overall construct - something Masquerade demonstrated (and Merlin Mystery), and something I really expected in Dr. K's TISOTGH puzzle (but was let down miserably).

I had also constructed a digital version of the overlay way back when. The "ORDER" letters could be associated with the trees, but I think that would be a stretch. They don't align very well for me. That said, I assumed that the photocopies were perfect, and didn't spend the extra effort to make sure all pages were aligned and of the same size.

Actually, both the centering and the rotation of the image pages was quite a bit off. In some cases the images are even distorted in a diagonal fashion (most evident on the map pages). Some images were rotated as much as 1.3 degrees, and off centered by a centimeter (x and y axis). I'm not sure yet if it needs to be ultra precise, but I did find that the letters landed on trees. Not exact tree centers, but in the leaves...

Some thoughts I've had on this puzzle. This clue could have been given as:

    PLACE
    IN
    ORDER

just as easily as it could have been placed in the manner it was:

    ORDER
    I N
    ECALP

Interesting that PLACE is spelled backwards, and is the bottom line... One thing that struck me immediately when looking at this puzzle, is that the letters of the states around the frames could be read in order, much like a "clock" (watch), except the word in the 6 o'clock position (which would be reversed), and the OHIO. I think you can see where I'm going with this...

As for the PINETREES anagram - I'm not so sure that's what this one is. Plenty of anagrams already in the text (DONLEG/GOLDEN, and PLACEINORDER), which have verifiers. Yet another anagram seems a bit overkill, but OK - let's accept it for what it appears to say. There are many ways that state letters could have been capitalized in order to generate those same 9 letters - is there significance to the states and their frame positions which were selected?

Finally, for the CASSIOPEIA cypher, many other states could have been selected using 1-6/I-IV, and not only that, but many other positions within the states that WERE selected could have been used (like dead nuts center). Is there more to this clue, like the particular states that were selected and their frame positions?

Sun rises in the east - starting position. Travel west - go forward in time, as the Sun. Another day over and over again - continue the next day where the prior day started. Loose interpretation, but sure looks like the path/quest is a clock/day traversal. A league is defined as the distance one travels in an hour - 3 leagues and 2/3's more might signify 3 hours 40 minutes. To rest is to stop, or a stop in time... If one views the state names around the frames as clock faces, then 12 of these "state frame"s might signify 6 days, with 4 states on a clock's day face, and 4 on its night face (8 states)...

It seems that somehow a clock of sorts is built out of the state frame traversal - but where to start, how to order, the problem with clocks going 1-12 twice a day, the capital letter positions, how to relate to tree rows, etc. Once re"ordered", perhaps the CASSIOPEIA letter selection is somehow used. Certainly, I'm seeing some sort of huge construct here, consisting of reordering the state(capitol) names/letters, then selecting bits back out. Anyways, figure I'd give a good chunk here, and try to revive this beast... I figure, even if it's solved, I doubt I'm going to travel to the midwest to dig up a $10K treasure which is most likely no longer there. Sure, if a collaboration here results in a solution, it would be nice to get a fair share LOL, but this thing should be solved. Particularly when the author is apparently 'pissed' that people other than the original 'inner circle' of questers are working on it. He wants to contribute this to society, yet wants to pick and choose what this society consists of - can't have it both ways.

I think the PINETREES anagram is meaningful. There is that bit in the poem about some trees having needles...
"...it may well be doubted whether human ingenuity can construct an enigma of the kind which human ingenuity may not, by proper application, resolve."
