Actually, I thought that was more of an argument for, rather than against, a more 'exotic' location, given the strange bit about the publisher paying for the solver's transportation and the author meeting the solver at the apple's hiding place. It doesn't seem like the author wanted people to go searching by themselves.

Good point - I always took it to mean that perhaps it was hidden in a location that would cause a hunter to get into trouble or be suspect if they started digging around on someones farm or in a public park

Just a thought, I do have a very good friend up that way that I hiked the entire Appalachian Trail with years back. He loves to get outdoors and know about my "treaure hunting" fetish. I think it may be too late in the season to start looking now, and I honestly have never even looked at this hunt. But, I am a great on location guy and would certainly entertain coordinating something, if just for verification, if this seems practical. The gent I am refering to is an state attorney in Alaska, you can ALWAYS trust those guys right? Anyway, PM if the need or possibiliy should arise. I'd love to see you solve this thing.

    Cheers,

    Domino
