Aye. I am curious about the potential for some code relating 8 states' names or capital city names to a numeric. I have no idea which 8. A simple substitution would be all I'd expect. ...friends gossip...dont let it go to your head...hmm.

Consideration: Calumny of Apelles. Column-Apples. Cassiopeia = throne. Throne room = Calumny of Appelles setting. Based on the POBox address for this hunt, it might be a hint of origin for something. Ive identified a historic link from the early 1900's for the erecting of 12 historic markers starting in St. Paul, Minn. and ending with the Astoria Column, an homage to early settlers migrating west. Im not fully commited to any particular logic or proof of this choice in city or approach yet. Ive mainly thought in terms of hay stack and milk curds...what would be most helpful is if someone could make sense of the mysterious letters hidden among the illustrations. Maybe it spells out something that wil help pin things down.

Curious: if A is for Apple, what are the rest of the letters representing? Is there some standardized listing for the alphabet?

Maybe an attempt to find an old mother goose book with the ABC's and take each letter as a key then use the page number it appears on to determin what location in each block of rhyme text...

I tried some simple puzzle-foo with the Tom Thumb's alphabet from Mother Goose but I didn't come up with anything.

8 States hint could be a latitude line approx 46 degrees, feeds through exactly 8 states, narrowly missing tips of Vermont and New York.

More accurately this makes for a short 15-20 mile wide north-south stretch bound between the northern most tip of New Hampshire and the southern most point of Washington (Reed Island). The coastal area of Tillamook actually fits in this zone. There is a lighthouse 11 miles west of the town along hwy 131. Unfotunately I have no conclusive link to the puzzle...just putting the puzzle into a what if perspective.
