Default Best Way to Fold the Book Like Mad Magazine

And the genius that came up with this is ...

    unknown

Around Jan. 4 the phrase THERE ARE THIRTEEN first started popping up on the boards (TresureNet, Yahoo, Q4T), and soon after people found out that by folding p. 77 together you could get the message by reading the cursive letters formed by joining the left and right borders. This solution was confirmed by People Mag and referenced by Stadther on the Feb. 18 solution posted to atreasurestrove.com.

This crucial find may well have been what spurred Stadther to release his AP clue and confirm its solution shortly thereafter.

Despite trolling through the old TreasureNet thread and the Yahoo! boards, I couldn't fing the original poster who came up with this. As far as I could tell the solution method (how to fold the page) was first posted by pinetree to Q4T on Jan. 5. Does anyone know who first posted the THERE ARE THIRTEEN phrase?

pinetree's solution method (from Q4T thread):

Found the "there are thirteen" last night...

Bring the right and left-hand borders together, as if the picture had been removed. The bottom halves of the letters are on the left-hand, and the tops on the right. It's in lower-case cursive script.

There may be some more that I have missed, but as far as I can tell that's it.

    So, thirteen what?

I found this posting, which was one day before Pine Tree and I posted the "there are thirteen" solution on the Q4T board:

Yeah, wilhouse, I remember going back to the old TreasureNet thread, but the post there (Jan. 4, by chellerud) was clearly a forwarded message full of carrots. There has to be someone else who put this solution online beforehand. Or maybe chellerud just cut and pasted something that'd been emailed.

Oh well, given that nobody posted the method for folding, I think that you and Pine Tree deserve most of the credit. Sorry for not mentioning you in my original post, wilhouse. I didn't realize that you and Pine Tree had collaborated.

TM - we had not collaborated. Just two crazy minds thinking the same thought at the same time.

I actually discovered the "there are thirteen" at about 9am that morning by printing it out large size on my office printer. But I could not access the site until I got home. Pine says he figured it out the night before, so he beat me to the literary punch regardless.

Regardless, it's of little help, and I'm not looking for the notariaty. Just glad to be here (and still looking for the Secret Treasure in Houston).
