    Default DYAHR

    This is perhaps the most tantilizing unsolved clue to Kryptos. In the first line of K3, the letters DYAHR are separated from the other letters with extra space on either side. Three of the five letters, YAR, are raised above the others.

    In reference to this, Sanborn has said "Has anyone figured anything out about these yet? This is important."

    Important indeed.

    I keep thinking there is a binary encoding layer here, and this a hint or key. 01101 or 10010 in binary, 13 or 18 in decimal, M or R. You can encode the alphabet in 5 bits. Maybe every 5th letter of K4 is a signal letter. You take the binary mask and use only the letters in the 5-tuple that are masked by the binary 1's. Just thinking out loud.

    I know this could rate me a Captain Obvious award, but those letters anagram to HARDY. Thomas Hardy, Hardy Boys, hardy har har...

    There is supposed to be one very obvious clue in Kryptos that no one has mentioned yet.

    So I just thought I would mention it.

    The obvious may have been what has been overlooked so far with Kryptos.

    I had to look up Thomas Hardy on Wikipedia. It says D.H. Lawrence was a fan of Thomas Hard's work. DH are the letters set lower than the other three in DYAHR. Perhaps some common thread between them?

    Thomas Hardy wrote a novel "Desperate Remedies". an early detective story. The K3 solution misspells 'desperately' as 'desparately'.

    I'm just throwing out ideas here.

    There is an extra letter L on the Vigenere tablea side of Kryptos. This extra letter L is on the same line as the DYAHR letter group. This extra L does not appear on the CIA website transcription.

    What if DYAHR and the extra L are all part of the same "clue hidden in plain sight" promised by Sanborn? As Sue pointed out DYAHR anagrams to HARDY, and the letters D, H, and L are set apart from the others.

    What do Thomas Hardy and D.H. Lawrence have in common? And what might they have in common with Kryptos?

    Both were English - both writers - both during the Victorian era (which is also when Howard Carter discovered Tut's tomb).

    D H Lawrence wrote a poem titled : Palimpsest of Twilight

    Palimpsest Of Twilight
    D. H. Lawrence

    Darkness comes out of the earth
    And swallows dip into the pallor of the west;
    From the hay comes the clamour of children’s mirth;
    Wanes the old palimpsest.

    The night-stock oozes scent,
    And a moon-blue moth goes flittering by:
    All that the worldly day has meant
    Wastes like a lie.

    The children have forsaken their play;
    A single star in a veil of light
    Glimmers: litter of day
    Is gone from sight.

    Thomas Hardy used the word "palimpsest" in one of his works - i think it was "Far from the Madding Crowd".

    Will try to find some more connections...
    Whatever I feel like I wanna do. Gosh!

    Awesome! Keep going Sue. If this pans out, you may have won yourself the 5K twollar challenge.

    It is likely that DYAHR and the L are in some way clues to the keys to one or more of the encryptions. 'Palimpsest', of course, was the key to K1. Keep in mind 'abscissa' was the key to K2. They found a way for 'kryptos' to be a key for K3, but I think it is a stretch.
