Here's something else I found really interesting. I found "Far from the Madding Crowd" on google books (that's how I got the chapter and page number). I noticed that there was an earlier edition too, but when I searched it for the word PALIMPSEST, the word didn't appear in the text. So I went directly to the page where palimpsest was in the 1895 edition, I found that the original text (from 1874) was as follows:

But man, even to himself, is a cryptographic page having an obstensible writing, and another between the lines.

Kinda cool that "cryptographic page" was changed to "palimpsest" for the later edition!
Whatever I feel like I wanna do. Gosh!

EN DYAHR OHNLSRHEOC PTEO IBID YSHNAIA

If you look at the line, there are 2 letters before DYAHR - 14 letters between DYAHR and IBID - 7 letters after IBID.

The page palimpsest is on is 287. Palimpsest is also on the first line of the page, and the line we are working on is the first line of that section. I have looked at the first line of all of pages in the book that start with 2 and end in 7, and palimpsest is the only interesting word.

Also, if you take out the POET (PTEO) anagram, it leaves 10 letters - palimpsest is a 10 letter word. It even has the same number of duplicate letters as the remaining 10 letters.

    O H N L S R H E O C - has 2 O's and 2 H's

    P A L I M P S E S T - has 2 P's and 2 S's
Whatever I feel like I wanna do. Gosh!

    great thoughts all-

I haven't had much time to work on this but everytime I see the beginning line of that section, I see the word end.

now I know the en is not being considered part of the DYAHR, but I find it interesting that then the letters YAR(the raised ones) are at the end of this quarter.(they are set up as quartered, but should the P be dropped?)

given that the scroll is in quarters, could it be a clue on how to transpose it and then apply a key word.

Im sure its been thought about that this last section may need to be positioned differently(like the 3rd needed to be) and then a keyword needs to be used to decode using the vigenere cipher. That this last part needs both.

Cthree had mentioned about the KR being important. if we were to include the en, with these letters, then we would have en dyahr---and I know with this 3rd section the letters didn't need changed, but could those letters somehow relate to kr yptos?

I've been thinking about the anagram to "HYDRA". In Greek mythology, it was the name of the nine headed serpent that Hercules had to defeat as one of his tests. The word has come to be used to mean a complex, many-sided problem, that continuously present compounded difficulties. Of course "kryptos" is Greek (for hidden), so maybe Sanborn was trying to hint that the Kryptos is a hydra - a multi-layered problem.

I just thought I would add a little something that probably has to do with nothing...not getting into the deciphering or anything yet, just looking at the beautiful sculpture...It reminds me of a Sine/Cosine wave oscillator. Maybe something to do with math in the overall scheme of things? Just a thought. I did tons of research on this about a year or so ago and can't remember any of it at the moment...maybe it'll come back to me.

StarLady, IMO, "HYDRA" can be rationalized to fit the theme of Kryptos, but that does not help us find the keys or solve the puzzles. I hope Sanborn intended a more important result for the DYAHR clue.

Snowqueen, the shape of the Kryptos coppersheet is reminiscent of a wave, but technically it is not in the shape of a sine wave. It is shaped as two halves of a cylinder. I find it curious that Sanborn's later work features cylinders again with cutout letters and light projecting through them. Perhaps a progression of a theme?
