The clue made me think about the Roman calendar.
January and February were at the END of the Roman calendar after the first reform. Thus January (the BEGINING) was after the START and before the END (February) At a later point, January and February became the first two months. Jep |

That is a nice observation Jep.
The root of January is the Roman god Janus (pronounced like Janice) who was the god of transitions, keys, gates and doors. During times of war the Romans left the doors to his temple open so that he could intervene in their favor per their beliefs, but during times of peace his doors were always kept closed. |
