Leaders of the nineteenth century British army wore pieces of metal called oak leaves on their hats. The metal, brass, has a color similar to that of gold. So a leader or commander came to be called a member of the brass. Or he might have been called a brass hat. Or, even the top brass.

The Shakespearean English form of the word 'brass' can mean any bronze alloy, or copper, rather than the strict modern definition of brass.

In Norse mythology, the oak was sacred to the thunder god, Thor.

"In Egypt he could read the messages of dreams sent from the topless Mount of Olympus..."

This line continues to be a sticking point for me.

Anyone any ideas how "the topless Mount of Olympus" fits into the big picture?

it recalls the game of checkers.. the zigzag of Forrests orchestrated manoeuvers in the dark

I'm not sure how much, if at all, you follow the Thrill of the Chase, but there is a section that I was specifically referring to that had to do with Thor and Lightning..

so I find it interesting to find your post this morning..
that and the fact that when I first looked at my phone this morning, the first thing I see is an ad from a local radio station app.. it indicated what was currently playing (ads from that app pop up very rarely.. maybe twice in the last six months)

I cannot help but think this has to do with St. Anthony somehow, since St. Anthony is the name of the third highest peak of Mount Olympus and he was from Egypt. How this idea fits with "messages of dreams" and "topless" however I am at a loss to understand.

    M,

I believe there are many historically-based references in the puzzle, and Sacred Prize has said this, if I recall. So your idea likely has merit.

I do believe that this is a puzzle and the information in the book is used to progress through the story to discover the Key, something like this

Hermes is said to have been associated with dreams and the top of Mount Olympus is said to have been covered with clouds(thus topless).

The Latin word for "message" also means "messenger" so perhaps the reference to reading the messages of dreams sent from the top of Mount Olympus is a reference to reading the Hermetica in Egypt?

The Corpus Hermeticum is said to be Greek-Egyptian Wisdom text so this would be consistent with the mixture of references to Egypt and the Greek Mount Olympus.
