Am struggling with the part of the online clue "... so did they lay their mantle down for a king to raise it as his standard".

    https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=...entury&f=false

The only thing of interest that I have found out about the word "mantle" is that a long riding mantle/cloak worn by women in the 18th century was caled "a Joseph."

Although an interesting fact , I have been unable to see how it helps with understanding the clue.

Because this was the Christmas clue, and Joseph is associated with Jeseus, it does add interest to the clue. I dont see a core connection, either, though.

Another connection was “burning gold” and fireplace mantle.

I had the idea that the main meaning of mantle related to the physical body.

Here is an interesting connection with “mantle”. Makes sense if “a King” is carrying on the role of those before him.

The Christmas date of the clue is interesting. It might suggest a possible relevance of Joseph.

The reference to "...those feet in ancient time..." is supposed to be a reference to the idea that Jesus and Joseph of Arimathea came to England. Joseph is also the father of Jesus.

    Joseph -> je oph-> I Ophs -> ophis -> serpent -> present -> gift

The word "gift" and "for a king" in the context of "Christmas" brings to mind the "three wise men" and their gifts. This in turn suggests that the "they" referred to in the clue is the three wise men.

Following this train of thought further, since the first part of the clue refers to "burning gold" the "gift" of the wise men that the clue seems to refer to is "gold".

If so, what does "to raise gold as his(Jesus'?) standard" mean?

    M,

I think that clue works on several levels. I think the ostensible reference could be to Jesus and Joseph in England (although there was supposedly also a fleeing to hide in Egypt by Jesus father Joseph).

There is a standard being raised on p. 10 of the puzzle, and perhaps the burning gold relates to p. 10 or 13?

I need to think obout this some more. My initial thought on this clue is that it related to the Grail as a blinding light associated with purification.

I have had a hunch what the clue is about for a few weeks now, as a result of pursuing another line of inquiry, but haven't been able to fit the two things together.

After spending some time on it last night I was able to reconcile the clue with the hunch.

I suspect however that there is more to the clue, than that which I have already found.
