Mention by you and Astree of Tobit (and root) is attractive, since Tobias killed the giant fish and used the gall-bladder to restore his father's sight. Tobit could SEE again and they all lived "in prosperity and joy".

No mention is made in the Companion of how Tobias got hold of the internals of the giant fish. We can only assume he used a KNIFE which, whilst blindingly obvious, may be the "ancient secret device" mentioned in the LRB on page vii, "Authors Notes".

Incidentally, interesting you should call this thread "The END of the Line", hmmm...?

If this isn't the guts of the puzzle, then maybe I should fold

If this phenomenon is real, one wonders in what ghastly circumstances this owl died. Not a pleasant thought. I am a great fan of owls.

I prefer to see this image as a hoax.

On a brighter note, you seem to be exactly where I thought!

Yes, right near the end of that "frozen den" too. It is no red trick.

Having applied "the device" over the guts of it and tried to make the instrument work I struck a snag, wrong instrument responded.

On page 35 line 4, 3rd letter M (diagonally down) it explains that "My Eire (error) Hex U". Since we like owls and have evidence of same, we find page 35 line 6, 11th letter across H and see HOOT wending its way up. Nice! The ending T is in the same line as the aforementioned M which reads across " M He Seeks To".

A quick look at Google shows the target has two numbers. One ends in 3333, which is attractive and what we had got initially, the other, 2222, and it matches the required instrument given by that crafty King where this conversation began! The same line also fixes a single spelling "error" in the target name by changing K into M.

MINGO! No spelling error there either. Question for those interested is, where? Clue Nov 2009, "The sign to the village shows the way". It has been discussed before.

    IC,

This talk of India and prawns is making me hungry !

The clues are directly related to the puzzles path.

    ... " M He Seeks To".
    Quite curious, that.

Each step was a discovery. A piece of the final puzzle. A doorway in time.

And at the forest’s edge she found an old barn.

It was his workshop. Her father’s old place.

An owl started her when she opened the doors. He circled the barn and perched on a nearby tree. He was the watchman who had watched through the night.

She stepped inside. Cool dust lay everywhere, for here time had truly stopped
