    Very interesting pick up Hayward.

    The one thing I would say is that Duncan's clue uses the English word "noon" while the original point of reference uses the French "midi".

    I guess Duncan's clue is what is at issue and it is in English so perhaps that's the way to go.

    I like Paul Foster Case's "The Tarot".

    His exegesis of the Death card includes the following:

    "............The Bible says death is the last enemy to be overcome. But how? 'Overcome evil with good. Love your enemies.' In these two brief sentences is the whole secret.

    The forces of change which result in physical death are inimical only because we misunderstand and fear them. They are forces connected with reproduction, and by right use of imagination they may be tamed and transformed, so that they can be utilized for indefinite prolongation of physical existence........

    ........The change from the personal to the universal viewpoint is so radical that mystics often compare it to death."

    Thank you Horace, for the Paul Foster Case quote. I picked up on the Nun/Noon/Midi idea as this card has been appearing irregularly frequently recently in my readings.
    It is quite possible that this wasn't the intended interpretation, but because of the subject at hand and its implication, I can't help but to find significance in it.

    This card is associated, among others, with a threshold existing between the higher self and personality (Demon guardian?). With much discussion of "psychological death" in Maranatha, and even the quote from the LRB, "For to know the Seal is like a death of your present self, and the Gold is of a purer value than can be perceived in your imagination!", I feel that the significance is even perhaps more than singular, that is, perhaps two-fold.

    With symbol and allegory, I often find that a symbol "works" when it represents more than 1 idea simultaneously, and this is usually to indicate how the symbol is "locked" between two or more ideas. For example, Noon on the clock also ascends directly Northward at 90 degrees from the symbolic plane of Earth. That is, it is perpendicular, or square. Freemasons should find some relevance in this idea.

    When Plantard and his friends wrote this clue (taking at face value that his admission to the "hoax" was authentic), they certainly could have been familiar with the English translation of midi: "Mid day", "noon". It is a lateral step, but one that I find holding important value.

    For me, the longer I spend with the material, the "secret" appears less and less mundane. The full shock, I hope, will be to understand at one point what in fact the "secret" is hiding.

    The lower and higher natures in man are normally in constant conflict - the result is directly identified as the Beast of two-bit in this puzzle ( without going into further detail as to the encoding ).

    The ego normally confines one to the earthly realm. My understanding is that the Maranatha path guides one to a place where the ego is not in control ( or even, non-existent ), and a gold purer than can be imagined is present (" so did those feet in ancient times walk where they buried their burning gold " - piercing bright), like a death of your present self (per the Et in Arcadia Ego page 1).

    It is hard to say if direct application of .... 'Overcome evil with good. Love your enemies.' ... can be a cause, or an effect, of the Maranatha path.
