    Uh...hem

(Biology nerd rudely interupting the class)

The birds that Mimi and Lisa posted are flickers, a kind of woodpecker (the Alabama state bird is a flicker).

The birds that Net, Spidey, and Holli posted are European/Asian songbirds whose common name is also Yellowhammer.

    Genus: Colaptes *Genus: Emberiza
Species: C. auratus *Species: E. citrinella
Binomial name: Colaptes auratus *Binomial name: Emberiza citrinella

I know we have NOT been sticking strictly to the species of the state birds, but the rest of the posts have been in the same family as the state bird at least. We've had eastern bluebirds and mountain bluebirds, American/northern robins and European robins, etc.; close enough for contest work, I guess. However, THESE birds differ at the Order level.

So, er, has our leader posted incorrectly and others followed? Does somebody get to buzz Net? (I'm sure Mimi would enjoy that.)

Just wondering...(and now I will slink back into my hole).

According to this website - I am not wrong and the state bird of Alabama is the Yellowhammer - http://www.50states.com/bird/
A yellowhammer is a northern flicker. see this site for that info - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_birds

Oh, I'm never very good with words. Somehow my point got missed, let me try again.

According to this website - I am not wrong and the state bird of Alabama is the Yellowhammer - http://www.50states.com/bird/
A yellowhammer is a northern flicker. see this site for that info - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_birds
Nope, never said you were wrong about that at all. I am NOT disputing the Yellowhammer as the state bird of Alabama.

From the Ornithological Council page on US state birds: "Many of the U. S. State Birds were chosen before the trend of standardization of English common names began. Therefore, the "official" state bird name may be different than the name the species is now known by." [Note that the Alabama bird was proclaimed in 1927.]

My point was that common names can be misleading if not used with care. More than one species can have the same common name. Not such a big deal most of the time and many times those species sharing a common name will be closely related.

50states.com is also a link I have bookmarked here. If you click on the link for Alabama-Yellowhammer, it will bring up a page about the bird showing both common names and scientific (binomial) names. You can also check out this page from the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

OK, so the Yellowhammer (Colaptes auratus) is the Alabama bird. It is also known as Flicker, Yellow-shafted Flicker, Northern Flicker, Southern Flicker, Common Flicker, or Highhole plus many other names.

Now on to the second kind of bird (yes, a SECOND bird, hence the glitch). Some folks searched "yellowhammer" and the images they pulled are of this second type of bird whose most used common name also happens to be ( drumroll, please) Yellowhammer. This bird is a songbird (a bunting) that is found in Europe and Asia. This bird is Emberiza citrinella also known as the yellow bunting or scribbling lark.

So, two VERY different kinds of birds here. The first belongs to the woodpecker order, the second to the perching bird order. They just happen to share the same common name; not closely related at all.

Now, I guess, what you, the contest lady, must impart to us, is what do you really want. Are we restricted to state birds (or at least birds that are closely related; same genus and/or family) as we have been posting?

Or in other words: Are pictures of Yellowhammer the Bunting OK, or should we be confining ourselves to Yellowhammer the Flicker?

There, now I've probably made it worse than it was before; dug myself a really nice big, deep hole to stay in.

For those interested: a short article on common names (mentions our Yellowhammer Flicker): http://www.backyardnature.net/nametrix.htm
